Film Description:

Synopsis

'Warrior Or Assassin' (AKA Killing Cupid) is the story of Valentine (Jenya Lano), raised in the world of assassins as far back as she can remember. Trapped in a room with one of her dying marks, he asks her the question that will change her life forever: 'warrior or assassin, which one are we?' With his dying words, Valentine decides to leave her days of violence and search out the son of the man she has just killed in an attempt to try and rectify her life. But when her old comrades assume she has left to join forces with an allusive ex-assassin nick named 'Cupid', her old existence comes back to haunt her.

When a producer gives you a handful of cash, no matter how small, and says "go make me a movie", it's best not to look a gift horse in the mouth. Killing Cupid was such a film. My first attempt at any sort of a feature as a director, the script was done in 11 days and the film was ultimately shot in 9. There were a few things demanded of us: guns, martial arts and Lorenzo Lamas. Outside of that.... there was some open territory.

The film was always meant to be a dark comedy about assassins. In the end, the marketing of the film was to make it sound more like an action film, hence the AKA Warrior Or Assassin (so no one would "mistake" it for a romantic comedy... I mean with Killing in the title it makes you feel so warm and fuzzy inside). And since it's destiny was to end up on some video shelf in Bulgaria somewhere, I decided to enter the Film Festival circuit for the first time and try and find a second life for the film.

As with filmmaking itself, the festival world has it's own Dos and Don'ts for a better experience. And as with my experience in filmmaking I learned them the hard way (still am). But Cupid has over the past 18 months managed to become an official selection so far at 5 festivals, even earning a Best Director and Breakout Action Star nomination from The Action On Film Film Festival in 2005.

So, I have learned a lot from Cupid between the moment I typed Fade In on the script until sitting at a festival in Long Beach and watching my film screen for the first time. I still have a lot to learn in both areas but then I doubt I will ever be able to tell you I've learned it all.

Thanks Cupid (or Warrior Or Assassin or whatever the hell your name is)

I love the playfulness of this film, and a lot of the camera work was really brilliant! There are little pictures that stay in my mind, like the sweet swimming pool shot, the windmill flapping at the top of the restaurant, yes, the rabbit, and the two guys goofing off at the broken gas pump. I'll simply advise those who want an entertaining evening with a combination of action, surprise, and interesting characters, to see it.

I like this best of all your films. It's not my genre at all AND I liked it enough to watch it several times. There are so many great touches starting from the first trunk shot but the Rabbit alone would make the film a winner. Looking forward to more.
