AIR GUITAR NATION tells the story of how, in 2003, America finally caught on to what the rest of the world has known for years: Air Guitar is the last true art form. AIR GUITAR NATION documents the birth of the U.S. Air Guitar Championships and follows the first US Champion to the World Championship in Finland. Since 1996, the Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu, Finland have been growing exponentially. What was once a half-joke/half-ploy to offer a shot in the arm to the global peace movement is now an internationally attended event, taken as seriously (and judged on the same 6.0 scale) as Olympic figure skating. Today, thousands of fans flock to the small town in northern Finland to see wannabe rock-gods battle it out for a shot at instant superstardom. Full of triumph and disappointment, patriotic spirit and political tension, and tons of invisible guitars, the “fake” competition quickly turns very real for the nation’s best and brightest air seekers. Rockers of all ages and walks of life share a common dream: to be the best air guitarist in the world.
