Film Description:
Synopsis
As a young mystic on India's southern coast, Amma defies traditions millenniums old. Overcoming tremendous obstacles, she becomes an internationally acclaimed spiritual leader and global social activist. The film chronicles Amma's early life and radical break from tradition through 35 years of service with archival footage and selections from 60 hours shot in India, America and Switzerland; including her Tsunami disaster relief and ground-breaking humanitarian activities. We see Amma receiving the prestigious Gandhi-King Award for Non-Violence at the United Nations in 2002; Nelson Mandala, Kofi Anan and Jane Goodall were previous recipients. In 2005, Amma's organizations donated $1,000,000 to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund and by the end of 2006, Ammas organizations donated $46,000,000 to Tsunami Relief. This film is an inspirational illustration on how one devastatingly poor, severely abused woman freed herself from social constraints, overcame tremendous obstacles, forgave her oppressors, and now shares the worlds platforms with political and religious leaders. Amma leads a life-style revolution across diverse ethnic, political, economic, religious and non-religious backgrounds. It is a deeply moving portrait of one womans extraordinary life and her inexhaustible ability to awaken the transformative power of love within us. Her precedent setting humanitarian efforts radically transform the lives of individuals, communities and nations. This film reflects a unique cross-cultural and global perspective; it sheds new light on womens history, and better represents womens roles in their community, culture and in society. Ammas story is universal, and offers a rarely seen example of a woman spiritual leader.
