Film Description:
Synopsis
People are sloppy. They don’t always make sense. They interrupt, contradict and repeat themselves. They confront certain aspects of life, while denying others. They want to be liked by strangers and can be callous to those whom they love most. In this character-driven drama/comedy, the human desire to “just belong” is revealed in the little moments and everyday lives surrounding three sets of strangers living in the Pacific Northwest. One story follows Ulla, an introverted student beautician who rents a room in the home of Peggy, an elderly exhibitionist with a habit of placing misleading phone calls to fire departments. When Ulla is recruited into an intervention for a fellow classmate of hers, she is thrown into a set of circumstances that derails her role as a guest in a foreign home full of sound and silence. Meanwhile, Leo, a Native American road striper for the department of transportation, remains haunted by the impending death of his best friend, Leo’s inability to face death is only frustrated by the seemingly endless army of distractions that he sets up for himself. In the end, when it becomes too late, what remains is not only regret, but also a strange glimpse at hope. The final story is that of Sam, a Vietnamese banker who must make a decision at the office that will instigate a seemingly irreconcilable divide between himself and his adopted American son. APART FROM THAT offers an honest look at human vulnerability and the similarities between very different people.

just bought your dvd at quimbys book here in chicago. i had absolutely no idea what the movie was about- never heard of it, never heard of anybody related to the production- just felt compelled to get it. and i want you to know how completely illuminated i felt while watching it. i recognize these people. these are the people on this planet, in this country, next door to me, across the street from my parents house growing up, at the diner where i go to eat alone sometimes, at the bus stop early in the morning when the cold cuts through my clothing. films like this can cure the corruption of of our culture. i feel inspired to embrace my reality. no bullshit people with bullshit jobs in bullshit relationships feeling bullshit emotions. this is real life and real people, and its far more beautiful than the idealized cinematic heaven that has come to exist simply as a mode of control, alienation, and fear. i loved this movie- and i love you for making it. jesus christ.

Been about 6 months now. Looking back at that initial blog-our first ever- it's hard to believe all that has transpired since. This continues to be a remarkable learning experience. We are now on the eve of our European premiere-Edinburgh- and our sixth festival. Seeing some interesting twists in modern American cinema. It may just be me, but it seems as though more and more people are taking an interest in films that don't rely on expository dialogue and fake emotions. Dunno. Could just be the festival circuit, too.
see ya in Scotland,
Randy
