Film Description:

Synopsis

For more than a decade, Judith Scott has been deeply involved in making large, colorful body-like sculptures out of found objects and yarn. Her works are abstract, dense, multilayered and ultimately, a mystery. Judith cannot tell us what inspires her to create these objects. as a woman with Down syndrome, who is deaf and does not speak, these sculptures are Judith's most complex means of communication. Judith is an accidental artist. She spent 35 years institutionalized in her home state of Ohio with no creative outlet whatsoever. It was only in the 1980's when her twin sister Joyce regained custody of Judith and moved her to the San Francisco Bay Area that her creative life began to blossom. Judith's work is now in some of the most prestigious art collections in the world and has captivated the interest of collectors worldwide. Though she is not fully aware of it herself, Judith is famous. Join us on a journey to a realm that is little seen and even less understood -- the creative and personal life of an 'outsider' artist. We'll venture to the studio where Judith creates every day -- and where the local staff tries in vain to keep her from stealing all the magazines; the group home where Judith lives with her boyfriend, Paul, and other adults with developmental disabilities; and art museums around the world where Judith's mysterious and powerful sculptures are captivating audiences. 'Outsider: The Life and Art of Judith Scott' delves deeply into the life of a compelling, eccentric and talented individual who has survived in the face of daunting odds.

It was a whirlwind day on Wednesday as we prepared for our final screening at the Treasure Mountain Inn and then got ready to leave Salt Lake.

There's been tons of interest in the film from other festivals and now I'm talking with distributors too. All that came from Slamdance.

But the really exciting call came on Wednesday as we were waiting for our flight at the airport. Rosie O'Donnell wants to see the film! I'm blown away! Her web blog is at www.rosie.com.

It's a funny coincidence too, because I introduced myself to her on Main St. and met her partner after I told her that I married my partner, Heidi, at San Francisco City Hall the same day that Rosie and her partner got married there. So we took a moment to remember that joyous day and how happy it was to tie the knot and do civil disobedience at the same time!

Well, I never thought it would be at all advantageous to be a Utah native, but when it comes to this festival, turns out it's really a great thing! The Salt Lake Tribune featued me and a few other Slamdancers in an article about Utah being a breeding ground for filmmakers! Who'd a guessed??

World Premiere of Outsider at Slamdance! Jan 22, 2006 01:44PM
Hi Everyone--
My film premiered on Saturday night, January 21, 2006 at Slamdance and it went incredibly well!

We spent the day drumming up an audience, which consisted mostly of handing out postcards right in front of theTreasure Mountain Inn, because it's against the law in Park City to leaflet on Main Street (they can, and apparently will arrest you! All because generations ago some miners started to organize a union by passing out leaflets -- Welcome to Utah!!)

I leafleted Nick Nolte! He's been visible on Main St. a lot at the festival, and walked right into the Treasure Mountain Inn.

The energy here is fantastic, there's lots of great stuff going on, and now, I have this blog going to keep you all posted about how things are going.

Stay tuned for more updates from Slamdance!
