Outsiders Productions’ latest effort, Bowlin’ Alley, is a hilarious and often unpredictable look into the offbeat world of a small town bowling alley. Avery (Angelina Hampton) is the girl with dreams on her way out the door, and the film follows her on her final night in the colorful, bad-carpeted world of dim-witted would-be pool sharks, high stakes bowling competions, hormone crazy virgin teenagers, and a sleazy maintenance man eager to give her an evening she won’t forget. Bowlin’ Alley boasts a blockbuster soundtrack full of independent musicians as eclectic and unforgettable as the characters in the film. Shot on location in Ada, Oklahoma, the film incorporates a deft awareness of comic stereotype and idiosyncrasy, an affection for small-town life and a razor-sharp ability to ridicule it mercilessly. The flick itself is vividly inspired by the manic characterizations (and beautiful near-plotlessness) of classic comedies like Caddyshack, by the clausterphobic (and low-budget) hilarity of Clerks, and by the pacing of recent productions like television’s Arrested Development. Shot almost entirely in an actual Oklahoma bowling alley, BA manages to capture the reality of the world its characters inhabit – providing a fitting stage for the laugh-a-minute performances and quick tempo of the movie itself. Often hilarious, sometimes unexplainable, but always entertaining, Bowlin’ Alley is an indy flick that will blow your balls off.
