Film Description:

Synopsis

Cowboy Science is about beef production and environmentalism, two concepts that for most of us are as different as night and day. This fascinating look at Wyoming’s 150 square mile Pitchfork Ranch tracks ranch manager Jack Turnell and his hands from the time the calves are born in early spring, untill they are sold and shipped away in the fall. The ranch hands demonstrate the day to day, battling the elements and predators, while Jack Turnell discusses his philosophies and politics of raising cattle on public and private lands. Through coordinated resource management, Jack Turnell makes decisions from breed of cattle to grazing techniques that will maximize profits and benefit the surrounding wilderness. With little or no recognition these men and women work sun up to sun down seven days a week, raising beef and maintaining the delicate balance the Pitchfork Ranch has with the environment. Through their failures and successes they have created their own brand of “cowboy science”.
