CZECH DAZE is a comic view of cultural and regional heritage. It celebrates and shares a history that is a specific thread of Americana, and embraces the diversity that is the tapestry of our nation. Every year for 43 years, the colorful people of Clarkson, Nebraska, (pop. 685), celebrate their rich Czechoslovakian heritage with Polkas, Kolaches and yes, even a Queen. Did somebody say Polka? Throughout the festival we are treated to costumed beseda dancers and accordian jams. What's a Kolache? The Clarkson Women’s Club takes over the 100 year old Opera House as they demonstrate the art of pastry-making. Watch these hearty Midwestern women roll the Vdolky and Stretch the Studel. Really a Queen? Yes, Clarkson hosts the Nebraska State Czech/Slovak Queen pageant. Following the traditional Miss America-type format, these young ladies are judged on their kroje (costume), personality and talent. Last year’s winner clinched her crown in the talent competition where she performed a clogging routine choreographed to “The Accordion Man’s Polka.” Most importantly though, the Clarkson Czech Festival and Miss Nebraska Czech/Slovak Pageant happens every June by the hard work of the people of Clarkson where 'working shoulder to shoulder with your brother' means something and love thy neighbor is a tangible daily practice. Narrated by the old-timers of the town we learn how they've been able to keep their celebration of old world traditions alive by with their low tech to no tech approach. Their inspirational and tremendous spirit is celebrated in CZECH DAZE.
