Synopsis

Siblings Brian & Jeff Chaisson stumble upon a collection of unique though disturbing artifacts buried in an old navy footlocker belonging to their recently deceased grandfather. Strangest among these is an unusual and disturbing book, with origins dating back centuries. Later that same evening, while entertaining friends during an impromptu pizza and movie night, Jeff unveils the recent discovery in an effort to impress the group. Seizing the opportunity, the gang uses the book as a scare tactic against their favorite target and youngest member, Charlie. Charlie, meanwhile, sees the moment as a chance ‘right of passage’ and an opportunity to gain the group’s respect. Against the foreboding taunts of the other boys, he opens the book and unwittingly unleashes an evil force. The youngsters soon find themselves in a fight against an unseen enemy; one that attacks quickly and without warning. An unseen force has chosen to target the boys one by one…a presence with a centuries old history of violence and evil…a power that has chosen the form ‘of Darkness’.

The key to the film is in the direction. With almost no special effects, director Irwin uses lighting to his full advantage. The darkness is only darkness, but the implied horror is more intense than anything that special effects could create.

Pretty atmospheric...but it reminded me of that bad anna paquin film, Darkness
