Film Description:
A drug addicted poet searches for spiritual redemption.
Synopsis
Dan is a poet, a morphine addict, searching for spiritual enlightenment, spiraling into oblivion. Many documentaries on drug addiction present one dimensional cardboard characters with no interest in anything except their next fix, stereotypically drunken, homeless, skid row bums. Any complexities in their lives as multi-faceted individuals are reduced to a safe distance from our own almost acceptable make believe middle class lives. They are the hopeless. There is no salvation. We remain safe, pure, and exempt because there can be no possible connection between us. We can judge, but not understand or participate. This is not one of those films.Dan constantly attempts to achieve freedom: from society, from drugs, from himself. He has extreme moments of clarity and delusion. He has delusions of grandeur, thinking he can save the world, but then realizing he can't even save himself. He has been on the methadone program on and off, always getting kicked off due to abuse of the system. He has come to a belief that spirituality is his only means of redemption. Reading many controversial, religious and spiritual books , he has developed a personal and unique belief system that takes bits and pieces of different ideologies , mixing and remodeling them. Magic, demons and God co-exist in constant battle. 'Dark One' explores Dan's life and enters the psychological time and space of addiction where reality is only a dream.

The Pumelo Festival sounds great but.... I rarely check this page unless I have something to post. Likely I missed the deadline. Anyway here are my updates. I did not get into the top ten at TIFFG. Dark One was on shortlist for Byron Bay(one of the last 20films cut). Dark One was on the long list in Amsterdam( one of the last 100 cut) I have been busy creating and upgrading my web pages with much more material...Downloads,reviews,press.

The International Documentary Film Festival Jihlava has requested that Dark One be part of the new Documentary Film Center's archive, to be studied by students at FAMU, journalists, film professionals and the public. Jihlava discovers authorial documentary film, and follows it's traditional motto of Thinking Through Film. "A work of art voicing a unique experience, Connecting existence and essence, that arise and die out in each other. A writing that is overwriting a message to change the writing. Only in that way, the statement can be complete. The borders of film types and genres are transparent. Cinema is one film and one film is the whole of cinema, thousands of plateaus mirror one another. A film perceived as a documentary cares whether things exist or not. We cannot insist on names, exhausting everything that is supposed to be named. Thinking through film is neither a reason nor a principle, it is extension as a form. A film and a festival are two manifestations of the same, audience understanding being its state."
The festival Program Director of Jihlava would said they would provide me with the accreditation which will enable me to attend all our screenings and the other programs free of charge ! Jihlava not far from DOK Leipzig in Germany, and runs from Oct 23-28. More information about Jihlava can be found at.....

FAMU - Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. (FAMU) is an integral part of The Academy of Performing Arts, which has been found after the World War 2nd in 1947. It is one of the oldest film schools in Europe, which kept its tradition even during the difficult time of communist regime. There are many influential filmmakers and scriptwriters among graduates from the school, many of them are known also within international context, e.g.: Stanislav Barabas, Oscar winner Milos Forman, Oscar winner Agnieszka Holland, Věra Chytilova, Juraj Jakubisko, Vojtech Jasny, Woody Vasulka, Lordan Zafranovic, Jan Sverak, Ivan Passer, Goran Paskaljevic, Magnum member Josef Koudelka, Jan Nemec, present Prague and National Rabbi Karol Sidon, Stefan Uher, and most of people working in the local film and TV industry either in artistic or production positions, as well as still-photographers in various media. The star-studded period form FAMU were the 1960s, but the school managed to retain a comparatively free atmosphere through also the politically repressive 1970s and 1980s. Many professors and graduates emigrated on the other hand, and while abroad, contributed significantly to the education of American cinema school students (especially Frank Daniel and Vojtech Jasny). Foreign contacts were maintained in those days through the International Centre of Cinema and Television Schools CILECT (Centre Interrnational de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinema et de Television) and through international graduate-film reviews at Karlovy Vary - as part of the International Karlovy Vary Film Festival. In November and December 1989 the students and some of the professors of FAMU made a significant contribution to the overthrow of the repressive Communist regime. The faculty is a founding member of CILECT, of the European League of Institutes of Arts (ELIA) , and of the European Association of Cinema and Television Schools GEECT (Groupement Européen des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Television). Works of its graduates have reaped many awards at international festival and have often been coproduced with and breadcast over domestic television networks.FAMU is one of three parts of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. The other schools are the Theater School and the Music School. The Academy is led by the rector (president) and his vice-rectors. There is also the Academic assembly as the top collective institution of the Academy and the Board of Advisors, both on the whole Academy level. This structure is analogically implemented also within each faculty, which is led by the dean. The school is devided into 10 departments: still photography, directing, documentary, scriptwriting, cinematography, sound design, animation, producing, and a recent interdisciplinary department - the Center of Audiovisual Studies. Integral part of the school is the FAMU Studio, providing complete professional facilities from digital Betacam and HDV to 16 and 35mm film for students´ work. There are 112 professors and instructors, 16 persons administration staff. The Academic assembly has 9 members. The Board of Advisors has 14 members, mostly academics from other universities. There is altogether 350 students in Bc, Mg and PhD study programs plus there is app. 80 international students, taking special study stays or a practical cours, every year. More information about FAMU can be found at http://www.amu.cz/?r_id=610
