Synopsis

“ We can throw our pebble in the pond and be confident that its ever-widening circle will reach around the world.” ~ Dorothy Day Dorothy Day: Don’t Call Me A Saint tells the story of the New York writer and anarchist who the Vatican is considering for canonization, but Dorothy Day is no ordinary saint. At 18 Dorothy was a writer for radical newspapers during the Bohemian whirl of 1917 Greenwich Village. There was an attempted suicide, an abortion, a child out of wedlock, and a conversion to Catholicism. Dorothy's conversion, however, forced her to sacrifice her common-law marriage and her quest 'to build a new world in the shell of the old' cost her only child a normal life. The film begins at the height of the Depression with Dorothy meeting the French peasant philosopher, Peter Maurin. Together they created a voluntary poverty social justice movement - not tied to church or state. Dorothy's witness to justice led to several arrests and to a life on the road helping others. Dorothy died of heart failure in 1980 at Maryhouse, the home she founded for homeless women on the Bowery. The movement Dorothy Day began in 1933 lives on in over 180 Houses of Hospitality and Soup Kitchens around the world. Her socially critical newspaper still sells for a penny a copy. Interviews with Dorothy’s intimates, her personal writings and compelling images of her life and times, evoke Dorothy's dramatic attempt to marry her spiritual calling with her dedication to social justice.
