Film Description:

Synopsis

DOWN DOG is a spiritual satire and celebration of the explosion of Los Angeles “yoga culture” and the proliferation of ersatz “gurus” capitalizing on the zeitgeist of our times - the West's fascination with the East. DOWN DOG transports us to the yoga world of Guru Dave, a charismatic “yogi-to-the-stars” at the peak of his notoriety. A legend in his own mind, Dave has a talent for espousing “spiritual truths” before a rapt cult following of beautiful women, but he misuses his ethereal charisma to philander his female tutelage and maximize his ego, wealth, and fame in the City of Lights. The World is his oyster. Dave's biggest problem? He talks the talk, but can't quite walk the walk. His perfect Harem Universe of asana, women and song is rocked when Grace, a truly enlightened African American woman with the face and stature of Buddha enters his orbit. Our “Bodhisattva” sets out to help Dave achieve the next level in his spiritual development by confronting Dave with his duplicity and providing him with the challenge of his lifetime. Should he fail, his fiefdom will collapse. Is our duplicitous false prophet up to the task? Only Grace's guru, Ascended Master Sri Babajiji Yogananda knows the truth. Dave gives it the old college try, but when Grace demonstrates her spiritual prowess by physically “levitating” before his tutelage, Dave is exposed and a new Guru is crowned. In the end, Grace carries the day in this comedic tale of female spiritual empowerment.
