Film Description:

Synopsis

East 3 explores the Arctic town of Inuvik. The film investigates life in the sub-zero temperatures of the Canadian wilderness focusing on the hunting/trapping lifestyle, the community greenhouse, dog cruelty, traditional games and music. In this often disturbing film we are taken on a surreal ride through this remote community. The town consists of Inuvialuit (Eskimo), Gwich’in (Indian) and white Canadians. The town suffers, like other communities in the Arctic, from high suicide rates, high levels of alcohol and drug abuse and high levels of child abuse. In the winter, temperatures can get as low as –55 degrees Celsius. The film focuses on 4 main strands: Norm Anikina – Norm is an Inuit who lives a traditional hunting/trapping lifestyle. However, as this lifestyle becomes less fashionable and less profitable Norm’s lifestyle may be in jeopardy as he decides to sell up and move south. Inuvik Community Greenhouse - Inuvik Community Greenhouse aims to get the local community growing their own food in spite of the sub-zero temperatures. Beaufort Delta SPCA – Linda Eccles set-up the local SPCA in Inuvik after seeing horrendous dog cruelty in the region. Her task, to rescue dogs is in conflict with the Town’s official policy of shooting dogs. Traditional Pastimes - The Northern Games consists of sports such as caribou head-skinning muskrat skinning and spectacular high-kicking games. Meanwhile, the beats, songs and movement of native drum dancing tell tales of tradition and life in the north.

Hello, All of us at The Moon, The Eye (ie, me) are pleased to announce the first 2 confirmed dates of the East 3 UK tour: Tuesday 26th June - Thameside Theatre, Grays, Essex - 8pm free entry. Wednesday 18th July - Electric Palace Cinema, Hastings, East Sussex - 8pm £5/£4. I will be doing a Q and A at both events if you can bear the idea of me rattling on for a while. More dates to follow. I am also delighted to announce that the Thameside date on the 26th June will also include the very first Young Film Academy Film Festival showcasing 4 films made by local children. This event is also free, runs between 7-7.45pm AND you get to see East 3 afterwards! What a night. Extra news, the rather brilliant Mike Everleth at www.badlit.com, a very cool LA based film review site, has 'bigged-up' (as they say on the streets) www.themoontheeye.co.uk. Nice one. See you at the screenings Mr Young www.themoontheeye.co.uk

Welcome, oh pretty ones, to a new dawn. I am delighted and enchanted to announce the launch of Mr Young's new website www.themoontheye.co.uk Have a gander for yourself and see a whole new world (created by the rather clever Mr Evans at Fireloop, a giant amongst men). This ties in nicely with the fact that hyperReel is now dead and the moon, the eye is the new film production company that has taken over all things filmic and, erm, Mr Young-like. Keep visiting the news section of themoontheeye.co.uk for forthcoming details about an official launch party as well as a pile of other stuff that is about to happen. Probably. You can even drop a line to mryoung@themoontheeye.co.uk if you can spare some words of kindness. Those of you who aren't very good at remembering new addresses mryoung@hyperreel.co.uk will be active for some time yet. What is 'the moon the eye'? It's an old short film that was never finished but I have a funny feeling it may well see the light of day. Or the light of the moon. www.themoontheeye.co.uk

Excellent realism of Town of Inuvik, the harshness some turn an eye from and few who see it. The love for Traditional Culture to continue are shown with great warmth, and the sad reality depicted of the expence of living in Inuvik. Gripping

At times as chilling as the climate it depicts, the film is also at times funny and warmly touching.

This was an interesting insight to life in within the ardtic circle through well condcuted interviews. There were certainly some characters out there. I would have liked to have known a little more about the night life and what the younger generation got up to, but then again, perhaps there wasn't too much to do. i enjoyed this film, it was well put together and some of the footage captured was quite spectacular - particularly the northern lights. :)
