Film Description:
Synopsis
Simon has organised his first Speed Dating night. He’s rightly nervous. His choice of venue: a crumbling community centre in the East End. Ten people come together looking to connect. Each has their reason - romantic, business, cheap thrills, just for a laugh... Do the lonely hearts find what they are looking for - or are they setting themselves up for a fall? Encounters is a funny, romantic and moving exploration of the search for love in the current London singles scene. Encounters is the first film from established British character actor Pat Kelman ('The Odyssey', 'Lighthouse'). Using techniques pioneered by Mike Leigh, Eric Rohmer and Lars von Trier the director and his cast have created a funny, sad and touching insight into the quest for love in the Big City.

Sombre-toned Brit romantic drama, in a vaguely dogme idiom. It's an intriguing and atmospheric film, which benefits from some striking performances (Jenna Shaw is especially strong, and Patrick Thornham is weirdly effective as a psycho).
