Synopsis
This documentary is based on the inspirational legacy of the Kiser/Payne family in Portland, Oregon. Inspired by family matriarch, Grandma Zula, the Kiser/Payne family has had a long tradition of building community, transcending racial barriers, and utilizing political channels to meet the needs of their community. Through accapella gospel vocals and narration provided by Zula?s great granddaughter; interviews with Zula's granddaughter, historians that knew this family, and friends that shared their experiences , we travel through time anecdotally; personally and with passion. Highlighted in this film are the following accomplishments: Zula?s daughter, Martha, and her husband, Isaac, played pivotal roles in the campaigns of Senator Ron Wyden, Mayor Neil Goldschmidt, Oregon Congressman Bob Duncan, and Oregon Congresswoman Edith Green. Martha Payne was a union organizer and brought together disenfranchised Black women and 'upper class' white women to create change. Their daughter, Margaret, became one of the first African American women to attend St. Vincent's School of Nursing. Their son, Isaac, became the first African American to graduate from the Air Force Academy. Margaret?s daughter, Julianne, has carried on the family legacy by devoting her life to community service. This film provides a personal account and historical reference into the African American migration to Portland from 1945-1948; a description of the transcendence of racial barriers in the 1950?s; a bridge to understand community and political activism in the 1960?s and `70?s; and an inspiration to create cross-cultural understanding and improve our own communities.
