Film Description:
Synopsis
Named for the Norse goddess of transformation and the Underworld. Rural and rustic scenes take on an otherworldly and ancient atmosphere. Natural symbols in stark blacks, whites and greys piece together a surreal journey through the physical - to the chilly spiritworld. Originally composed for and projected during a live sound performance, the footage has since been edited for viewing. The sound track is completely original and adds to the insubstantial and ambient nature of the imagery. Repetition becomes analog to memory - both personal and ancestral. Fleeting glimpses of wildlife emblem fragile vitality. The carrion birds, in folklore, are the keepers of the dead and divine messengers. Each scene is arranged along with specific sounds meant to echo a sense of grandeur, yet contrast it with the intimate nature of mortality reflected in the symbolism. Shot in winter the piece naturally implies a deathly or still state. Yet the emblems of fertility and wild passion abound for those versed in the coded language of ancient people. Viewers have called the film 'haunting' and 'chilling'. Two words which describe the intention quite well. All shooting and post production, as well as sound recording and mixing was accomplished by John Harford via a home audio and visual studio. It is the culmination of several years of research and study of both the natural and the supernatural. This piece follows a similar photographic project by John Harford, entitled Myrkwood, and continues his fascination with ancient folk tales and natural symbolism.
