I knew Lamec from the Upstate NY hip-hop scene, but never had the chance to work with him. When I heard the EP for his new album, it blew me away. Lamec was successful in creating a new sound, mixing "jungle" break beats with rap verse. Lamec, is a truthful person and his emotionally charged verses pull the audience in, he's not afraid to open up and tell it like it is. I found this refreshing in an age where machismo and arrogance dominate the airwaves.. Lamec didn't want a typical hip-hop video for this new sound that we began calling "Dark-Hop" or "Street-Hop", and I was excited to create a video that would represent the confusion, angst, and isolation that is represented in the song.

Also, this was my first video that used a good deal of CGI effects. I have to thank Nick Rios for all his help with that. This is the first video that we produced together under the shared name "Novakaine".

Factoids: The video was shot over the course of 2 days. During the subway sequence, we had to hide our cameras until everyone was in place, then shoot as many takes as possible before people caught on. There are both placed actors and real people in that sequence. Lamec had to use a tiny MP3 player as a playback device. The body-cam device was built by hand using aluminum poles and counter-weights.

Dark-Hop... I'm digging it. The music was pretty good... interesting new genre... but the music video is AWESOME! Good mix of "spy shots" and body cam shots to create that eerie feeling of being followed.

Very good techniques for blurring the line between reality and fantasy. It toyed with the viewer's mind whether what the artist was experiencing was real or imagined and his feeling of paranoia really spilled out of the screen and into the audience.

very clever use of tv's. totally reminds me of 5 am nights i've had and how everything becomes so random.

Short film or promotional piece for "Dark-Hop?" If it's a promotional piece then I bet it will do well. But know that this is from someone who finds nothing of value in rap music of any form. I guess the story is in the music but just not for me. I liked the intensity of the piece though and I think the camera work in the subway scene was ingenious. Lots of filmmaking talent here. Best of luck to you with your film. Sometimes it's all about finding the right niche and I have a feeling you might have found it.
