Synopsis
Upon moving from Idaho to Hollywood, Common Paine discovers early on that he is SMALL, very, very small. In a vast sea of undiscovered talent, Common realizes his chances are slim. Then, a surprise character (possibly the most original character in the history of cinema) reveals something to Common that alters the course of his dream. 'you're currently in a movie right now.' Armed with this knowledge, Common sets out to find his movie style. He spoofs movies like Fight Club, Rainman, Casablanca, When Harry Met Sally, Braveheart and many more. He tries to copy cinematic characters like James Bond, Woody Allen and Clint Eastwood, in search of his own cinematic character. He falls in love with the girl across the street who comes to realize that she is a character he is writing into his movie. She becomes appalled at the manipulation and refuses to take part in the falseness of it. Throughout all the events and humor, we come to realize that all Common Paine really ever wanted was to be a REEL hero. Compelled by a suggestion from the girl across the street to become a new kind of hero, to avoid formula, Common hits the library to investigate FORMULA and its roots. In doing so, he becomes enlightened as to the true nature of Hollywood and its intellectual hold over the world at large. Is there a conspiracy? What will Common Paine do with his newfound enlightenment? How can he get the truth out in the CITY OF LIES?
