Film Description:

Synopsis

This project covers the history and love of the jukebox... from Edison to iPods... from the speakeasies of the 20s to the modern dive-bars of today. The jukebox is slowly vanishing as it is quickly being replaced by Karaoke Bars, DJ's, and iPods, but they can still be found in the lowdown roadhouses and back alley dive-bars where they first originated, and their romance and nostalgia lives on through the home jukebox owners/aficionados/collectors/ and fanatics who help keep these legendary machines alive today, such as the one we interviewed in our short (Terry Moran), whom owned upwards of 40+ record-playing jukeboxes all from the Golden Age of the juke. In its heyday, the jukebox helped bring people from all walks of life together to enjoy its music and was responsible for promoting a bar’s successful social atmosphere. Unlike the computerized technology of today’s iPods, which isolate and subvert the listener, the colorful, hand-crafted, richly designed, ornamental, bright glowing jukeboxes helped promote social interaction. Sadly, there is no longer any room for these big but beautiful, bulky machines as technology has made things much smaller and more efficient. This project helps document these glorious, richly designed, legendary machines of yesteryear before they slowly fade into obscurity.

LA Press Release: Jukebox Vanishing America Aug 29, 2006 08:03PM
Los Angeles Aug 20, 2006 Matthew Turner and Lance Miccio of Happy Trailers HD announce that their film “Jukebox Vanishing America” has been selected by the Rhode Island International Film Festival as an official submission for Grammy consideration for best film score: From Al Gomes of the RIIFF and Big Noise Productions: “The Rhode Island International Film Festival is pleased to announce that the score for your film 'Jukebox Vanishing America' has been chosen by our prestigious panel as a submission to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences' Official Grammy Awards Committee for Best Score.” “Jukebox Vanishing America” was the darling of the 10th Annual RIIFF. Its musical score created much buzz with committee officials and the film audience alike. Since its world premiere at RIIFF Happy Trailers HD co-producer Ken Hatley has represented the project to Discovery Channel HD, Eagle Rock Entertainment, and Withoutabox Productions. Turner and Miccio were the focus of much media attention during the event with the story of their film being picked up on the wire: “It deserves to grow into a full-length movie. This trailer is just a taste of where this history could go: Many jukeboxes were high carnival art, everybody has a jukebox epiphany story, and the soundtrack could be unforgettable.” - Sheila Lennon of the “Providence Journal.” The filmmakers were on Brown University Radio “Spoiler Alert” for a live interview about their film at: http://bsrlive.com/archives/playlist.php?p=4613. Turner and Miccio were also on hand at the RIIFF promoting their project at the principal film location famous juke-joint – Nick-A-Nee’s – in the heart of Providence, RI. Jukebox lovers please rejoice in our film. - Matt Turner and Lance Miccio. “Jukebox Vanishing America” is viewable at the following links: http://www.happytrailershd.com/flashmovies/jukeboxflash/ http://medialab.ifc.com/film_detail.jsp?film_id=1056&list=1. “Providence Journal” newspaper story and details at: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/ptech/weblog2/080806ccdrPTECHweblog.a8dc0e2.html Contact Info: Happy Trailers HD 202 Main St. Venice, CA 90291 Phone - 310-581-4130 Matthew Turner mattman5000@hotmail.com Lance Miccio artgasmzoo@yahoo.com

Brings me back to the days I tended bar in a college town and our bar was known for free popcorn and the best jukebox in town. We'd turn it up loud and people would laugh and throw money at me. Now, they listen to their iPods and ignore you.

This really brings back some fond memories. I remember growing up and putting my money in the jukebox and waiting to hear my favorite song. The power of the jukebox is ingrained in my heart and soul. I wish I could attend the screening but being in Los Angeles makes it difficult. I look forward to seeing this film.
