Mel is a musician and life-long bachelor whose longest relationship has been with his goldfish Daphne. He is a man of contradictions: a hopeless romantic and a shameless Don Juan. Acutely aware that he is nearly 40 and no closer to a 'serious' long-term relationship, Mel takes immediate and drastic action to remedy his situation: he sublets his apartment and moves in with Inga, his girlfriend of two weeks. Some unexpected feelings arise when Mel meets the lovely Diana on her wedding day and decides that she is the woman he has been waiting for his entire life. Questioning his drastic actions and consumed with thoughts of his newest love, Diana, Mel's relationship with Inga deteriorates. Mel soon finds himself out on the street with his goldfish and no place to go but back to his apartment that he has subleted to Ginger, an eccentric frog biologist who is less than pleased about their unexpected co-habitation. While negotiating his new living arrangement with Ginger, Mel tirelessly pursues Diana who is warming up to his frequent advances. Against her better judgement, Ginger finds herself falling for Mel. To further complicate matters, Mel's goldfish, Daphne has become suicidal since laying eyes on one of Ginger's research frogs. Will it take the insurmountable love between a frog and a goldfish to help answer the bigger question: is Mel capable of long-term pair bonding?
