Film Description:

Synopsis

“If I could put my finger on the day my family fell apart, it would be April 30, 1975,' says filmmaker Doan Hoang in the opening line of the compelling documentary Oh, Saigon. Accompanied by gripping images from the war, Hoang shows the story of that last day of the Vietnam War: Hoang was airlifted out of Saigon on the last helicopter out of the country with her parents. Meanwhile, Hoang’s older sister, Van, was mistakenly separated from the family and left behind in the chaos when her family fled to the United States. Twenty-five years later, Hoang returns to Vietnam to meet the people she left behind. She finds out what became of her sister in the aftermath of the war. She learns that her father, who fought for South Vietnam, had two brothers he had never told her about: a North Vietnamese Communist who fought against him, and a younger brother, against the war, deserted the South Vietnamese army during the conflict. In order to face their past and resolve the differences that divided the family, Hoang must convince her family to reunite in Vietnam. Oh, Saigon is an intimate and nuanced portrait of family that demonstrates the consequences of split-second choices, and the bitter legacy of war that lives on long after the fighting stops.
