Synopsis
Rocking the Boat looks at the music, life, & times of roadhouse rock legend and 3 time Grammy® Award winner, Delbert McClinton. It combines interviews about the life of musicians on the road and stunning perfomances shot on a cruise ship in the Caribbean where McClinton throws his annual floating musical festival. Shot in HD using 5 cameras, the film features musical performances by 14 artists. Delbert's story is one that covers 50 years of bars and musical encounters with the likes of the Beatles, Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimmy Reed, John Belushi and many others. The cast of Delbert's assembled musical friends represent a who's who of singer/songwriters and session players such as Rodney Crowell, Marcia Ball, Stephen Bruton, Jeffrey Steele, and many others. The story arc of most musicians is littered with stories of failed relationships, drugs, booze, and getting cheated by this guy or that. Delbert's story contains most those elements but what comes through is a the story of a guy who stuck to his guns, found the right woman. and doesn't complain or criticize. He's come to control his vices and talent so that at age 65 he is enjoying the most financial and artistic success of his career. As the closing credits song says, '..took off my shoes and dumped out the rocks, put all the snakes back into the box, now I'm where I wanna be, sitting here watchin' the rain.' 'Life is good, man' says Delbert, and the music is better than ever.

Rocking the Boat heads for Dixie after winning best documentary feature at the 16th Woods Hole Film Festival. RTB will screen on Oct. 13 at the Lyndon House Arts Center at 7 pm. Several members of the production staff will be there with me. Seating is limited-about 100-so don't wait too long to get tickets. Delbert McClinton and the rest of the cast have lots of frineds in the region so I expect this will sell out fast. We will pass out swag (postcards) and some flashy guitar pins at the screening.
