Synopsis

Carter is a reliable employee of Leroy’s Swedish Auto shop who spends his days digging into the cars’ inner workings, making repairs, and sending them back onto the road. Side-by-side with Leroy and Leroy’s son, Bobby, the men put in their time together, laboring under the same hoods with the same tools; each and every day eating at the same local lunch spot. After work, Carter withdraws into a solitary, voyeuristic routine. Driven by his interest in a violionist from the nearby university, Carter moves through the city to the rhythms of Ann Hathaway’s schedule, knowing where he can listen to her music from the shadows. Through Ann, Carter realizes an artistic equilibrium that counters his grease-laden afternoons in the auto shop. That equilibrium, however, is disrupted when Carter comes across an astronomy book outside his apartment. A clue on the doodled pages of the well-worn star map leads him to see that his routine is not, in fact, solitary – that he, himself, is being watched from the shadows. Sent into a frenzy of curiosity, Carter discovers that the unknown voyeur is Darla, the counter-girl from the local diner who takes his order each day. Carter and Darla are birds of a feather. As their relationship blossoms, Carter slowly extricates himself from his self-imposed obscurity. But Darla hides a deeper wound that promises to destroy their relationship if left unchecked. To save them both, Carter must shed his shell and confront a world he has always avoided.

Screening today at Landmark Regent/4:30 Jun 29, 2006 11:38AM
We had our world premier two nights ago, and we've got another screening today at 4:30. The premier was held at the Majestic Crest, a beautiful, old theater with glittering stars on the ceiling that was the perfect setting for our story. The film played to a packed house and seemed to be received extremely well. I sat in the back row, trying not to pass out from anxiety, and afterwards went up to the front to answer questions. One of the most rewarding things I've found about filmmaking is to have people recognize and appreciate the techniques I've used to tell the story, so I was very happy when people asked questions about color and camera work. All in all, the premier was an awesome, if not nerve-wracking, experience.
First Entry from LAFF Jun 25, 2006 12:20PM
I'm at the Los Angeles Film Festival with my film, "Swedish Auto". This is my first festival as a filmmaker, and I'm just trying to keep my head above water at this point. We've been lucky to have a lot of press and industry interest, meaning lots of meeting and interviews, but I'm also trying to make sure that I save some time to see movies. So far, I've seen some great films, and I feel like we're in very good company.

My film is a small independant film shot completely in my hometown of Charlottesville, VA over eighteen days last fall. All of the money we - the producer, Tyler Davidson, was a good friend from college at UVA - raised was from friends that I've known for years, and it's so great to have that kind of intimate bond through this chaotic process. (One of our key investors is the younger sister of my best friend from growing up - when we were making movies in elementary school, we always dragged her out to be an extra for us...and now twenty years later she's my executive producer!)

It's a small film, but we've gotten a ton of support from family and friends, and now we're here at LAFF and trying to make the most of it. We hope you come check out the film and enjoy it. See you there!
