Film Description:
Synopsis
'Self defense and defense of others (in the United States called alter ego defense or defense of a third person) convert what would otherwise have been tortious or criminal acts into excused (sometimes termed justified) acts when committed for the purpose of protecting oneself or another person. This necessarily includes the use of violence and, sometimes, deadly force.' Source: Wikipedia.org In America there is often a misunderstanding of the definition of 'self-defense' as it relates to a legal defense of the use of physical violence. 'The Knife' examines the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator of murder in such a situation as well as the dynamics that extend beyond the 'heat of the moment'.

The final cut has been made and the screener DVD authored...we are off to the races!
So far we have submitted to SXSW and The International Festival of Cultural Films. We're evaluating other festivals as well as preparing a screening copy for Triggerstreet which should be up this week or next.
We are very excited about getting the film out there and getting feedback. I'd like to once again say thanks to everyone who contributed to this project and look forward to the excitement that follows!

I just watched the first "release candidate" cut of "The Knife" and I think we're almost there.
There are a few tweaks to make, mostly just minor technical issues that we should have time to fix before the end of the month. It looks like we are on target for the limited triggerstreet release we planned at the beginning of the month.

The deadline for the final cut of "The Knife" has been set for 11/30/06 at which point we'll be screening the film at Triggerstreet.com for the purpose of garnering some feedback and determining the film's "festival-readiness".
For those of you interested in seeing the film in this early state feel free to contact us and we'll be sure to remind you when the film is available for screening. Participation at Triggerstreet is more geared for filmmakers and serious independent film buffs (the registration process is rather "formal") than casual viewers, however we feel that this venue provides us with the best balance between a limited release for the purpose of evaluating the film while doing our best to preserve the film's "general release" for the festival circuit. Once festival decisions have been made we will announce a more general release of the film.

Just a quick and dirty teaser trailer to whet the appetite...

I just received a copy of an article that ran in the local paper where we filmed "The Knife". You can see a scan of it under the "Gallery" section of "The Knife" Audience page.
I must have missed a few of the conversations the talent had with the reporter...

Over the weekend Jamie & I reviewed Matt's rough cut and I was very pleased with the results. The overal flow and tempo is where we expected it to be and the story still "makes sense" using the linearity that we chose during pre-production.
While Matt was working on the rough I've been experimenting with "grading" some of the clips and paying special attention to the exterior shots. For the next round of edits we'll be applying some of these preliminary treatments once the last few tweaks of the timing are applied to the rough cut.
I also laid down a basic score for the piece (just a starting point for now) which will at least let us get the temp music out and give us something that we can screen for a larger test audience. We're hoping to have something like this by next weekend but I'd rather hold off if necissary than force the thing out prematurely.
There is still allot to do before the final cut will be ready (we have some serious audio problems to solve) but things seem to be progressing on-schedule at this point.
If you'd be interested in screening a pre-release version of the film for the purpose of providing feedback please let me know.
Jason - The ProducerPrinciple photography for "The Knife" wrapped on 09/16 and we are just beginning the post-production process of cutting up and re-assembling the footage for the rough cut.
As this progresses I'll be fleshing out a description of the film as well as posting notes about the production for you to enjoy while we finish the film.
"The Knife" is expected to be complete in the November/December timeframe. We are looking for just the right festival to partner with. Any suggestions will be thoughtfully considered.
