Film Description:

Synopsis

Alice was born in southern Italy at a time when being redheaded and left handed was undeniable proof, according to Catholic belief, that she was a 'daughter of the Devil'. Even her own parents could not separate from their deep religious belief to embrace Alice as a normal child. So Alice ultimately lived in a world that did not want her. When they sent her to Catholic school, she edured constant humiliation and abuse from the nuns as well as rigorous separation from other children. With no one to turn to and nowhere to go but inward, Alice developed a severe spasticity and mental instability that forced her parents to pay attention to her. Since spasticity is a disease, not a sin, they could find redemption through medical assistance while Alice could keep them involved in her life. A good reason why, for years,no medical doctor or therapist was able to resolve her illness. When she met Dr. Rosh, Alice realized she had the power to change her life...but would she?

LUCANIA FILM FESTIVAL - INSIDE THE POTENZA PENITENTIARY Aug 25, 2006 10:34PM
Twenty women from Russia, Croatia, Poland, Camerous, Tunisia, Albania and Italy, all convicted of murder, women without an 'edge', nothing particular that makes them feel dangerous...and they are captivated, sucked into the film and the emotion. You can tell it hits deep. Even the guards are swiftly wiping away the tears. One woman rushes out of the room before her own scream bursts from her throat. I got a letter saying 'Thank you for touching those emotions truthfully.' Yes, the letter is handwritten, correctly written, there were no mispellings. She was the one who ran from the room. A foreigner like myself. Over fifty male prisoners watched the film. About ten minutes in, there was a rustle and ten men huffed out. The rest didn't move, eyes glued to the screen. I asked after the screening why the men left. Lots of possibilities, the guards said, maybe they don't like films, or they didn't want to show their emotions, or the wife was waiting... One man, studying economics in his spare time, and very articulate, said, "You are a foreigner and you learned something from us, that there are deeper motivations governing why we do what we do, it is not always black and white. The world would be a better place if people listened to each other, if countries stopped being afraid of outsiders..." The men asked for 15-20 minutes extra to finish their evaluations...and proudly signed their names at the bottom of the page. I encourage film makers and festival makers everywhere to see if they can engage a local prison in this type of in-house event. It is a win-win situation for everyone.

UNDERSTANDING ALICE - A bit of history Jul 08, 2006 10:44PM
It took five years for me to wake up and make the first phone call, the one that triggered UNDERSTANDING ALICE. The phone call never connected with the person I was looking for but that didn't matter. The die was cast. No going back. It took 6 weeks to prepare, 6 days to shoot, and about 8 weeks to complete the editing. The DP I really wanted - I called him the Poet - was involved on another project so I got someone else. This new guy loved problems and kept coming up with them. Unswayed, I'd solve them as fast as he created them. Then, the day before the shoot, he came late, really late, and started asking the kind of questions that tell you he hadn't read the 17 page script. My brain neurons started fraying. I was ready to fire him and send everyone home. Not spending my hard earned money on a dead horse. Then, the phone rang. I"m telling you, the Universe was on my side, the film was meant to get made. The DP I iriginally wanted had been released from a contract and was available 'if I needed him'. That call came around 3 p.m. First calls were at 7 a.m. the next morning. The lights were not up. My Director of Production was on the phone with the Asst. Director, both had known and kept mum. They didn't want to rock the boat. Hey, I understand, it happens. Thing is, it was my film, my dream, and I was not afraid of rocking boats. By 6:30 p.m. the DP was fired. I offerred to rent his light park but he would have none of it, so we now had one hour to get a whole new crew and lights. Now, my Director of Production was on fire. She knew that 'No' was not an option, and she got the job done! She was Oscar level amazing! By 8 p.m. we had a new crew, light park, etc guaranteed to be on site by 8 a.m.the next morning... ...and so it was!

I applaude this powerful message: Alice's moment of confrontation speaks volumes about similar decisions we all face everyday.

There are some moments you just go, "No, it can't be like that, nobody would do that..." and then a flickering light goes on in the dark room of secrets...
