INDIANAPOLIS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL TO HONOR THE MAYSLES BROTHERS Sep 06, 2006 02:07PM
The Indianapolis International Film Festival Group will present its first Career Achievement Award to Albert and David Maysles for their remarkable work in documenting life, music, and art. Albert Maysles will be on hand to accept the award at the Closing Night Awards Ceremony to be held on May 4, 2007. In addition, a retrospective of the Maysles’ works will run throughout the festival. The award and retrospective is a co-presentation of the Indianapolis International Film Festival and the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art (IMOCA).

In a documentary made for the BBC, director Albert Maysles said, "Beautiful things in life - just go out and capture them. You don't have to invent them. You have to notice what other people only watch. In watching it, they don't get it. The poetic eye behind the camera captures it and makes it available for all the millions of people, who, even if they had been there, would just not have seen it anyway..."

Highlighted films include:

Salesman (1968) – Considered by many to be the classic American documentary, Salesman follows four door-to-door Bible salesmen as they walk the line between hype and despair on a tragic-comic journey through the heart, soul, and living rooms of America. Salesman will be preceded by Psychiatry in Russia (1955), the first films created by the Maysles.

Gimme Shelter (1970) – Known as one of the greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll documentaries ever made - The Rolling Stones 1969 concert tour was a crazy musical odyssey. In the late-60’s anything could happen, and on one tragic night in Altamont, California, it did. The audience was shocked when one fan was murdered by the Hell’s Angels security guards hired by the Stones to keep the crowd under control. The ensuing chaos was all captured by the Maysles camera. The time of peace and love seemed to have come to and end.

The Christo Films (1974 – present) – Not known for doing anything on a small scale, Christo has shocked and awed the world with his grand art installations – most recently The Gates of Central Park. The Maysles Brothers have been there through the years to capture the creative genius as well as the bureaucratic struggles with government figures who can’t wrap their minds around Christo’s work. This series concludes with a premiere presentation of The Gates, currently still in post-production.

Grey Gardens (1976) – Perhaps the Maysles’ best known film, Grey Gardens follows the adventures (or lack thereof) of the eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Big Edie and Little Edie, as they were known, lived their lives almost entirely inside the walls of their 28 room dilapidated mansion. When they were nearly evicted from their own home for violating sanitation and building codes, they made headlines – American Royalty lives in squalor! The details of their self-imposed exile were never known until the Maysles arrived with their cameras and tape recorders. The 2006 follow-up, The Beales of Grey Gardens will also be shown.

LaLee’s Kin: The Legacy of Cotton (2000) – Deep in the deltas of Mississippi, the Maysles encounted LaLee Wallace, a great-grandmother struggling to hold her family and her world together in the midst of dire poverty. Pairing her story with that of Reggie Barnes, superintendent of West Tallahatchie Schools, the film explores the powerful and painful legacy of slavery and sharecropping in the deep South. LaLee’s Kin was nominated for a 2001 Academy Award. Additional films may be scheduled.

The festival runs April 25 through May 4 and will present more than 100 films from around the world. Highlights of the 2006 festival included premiers of Over the Hedge, Ward Serrell’s The Heart of the Game, Deepa Mehta’s Water, Chan-wook Park’s Lady Vengeance, and Alexandr Sokurov’s The Sun. The complete schedule of films will be announced in March, 2007.

The Indianapolis International Film Festival offers awards for feature length and short films in three categories – American Spectrum, World Cinema, and Real Visions. This is the first career achievement award given by the festival. Members of the 2007 jury include screenwriter / novelist Dan Wakefield (“Going All the Way”) and director John D. Hancock (“Bang the Drum Slowly”).

The mission of the Indianapolis International Film Festival is to present films that inform, enlighten, and educate the community by providing a vivid reflection of the rich cultural diversity of Indianapolis and the world beyond our doors.

The 2006 festival received 305 entries, an increase of 211% over 2005. Highlights from the 2006 Indianapolis International Film Festival included several sold-out shows, including the Closing Night Presentation of Miramax’s Kinky Boots and a Special Presentation of Dreamworks Animation’s Over the Hedge.

The 2007 IIFF is divided into three major categories of Competition: American Spectrum - celebrating the finest in Independent American cinema; World Cinema – a collection of the best films the world has to offer; and Real Visions – a celebration of non-fiction cinema.

“In the past, documentaries have been some of our most popular films,” said Owens. “From The Story of the Weeping Camel to Murderball to this past festival’s The Heart of the Game, the non-fiction films we have featured have been among the finest. It was with that in mind that we chose to give documentaries their own category.”
