Film Maker's Blog
After a super long day everything is in place for tonight's show. In the last 48 hours we've fielded a bunch of calls from venues interested in booking future shows. And if that wasn't cool enough, we've gotten emails from fans who are driving a couple hundred miles for tonight's show!
We've been getting some amazing press for the event.
click here to checkout the coverage
In addition to the live music (Bardo Pond, Espers, Fern Knight and DJ Chief Wreck'em), theatrics, and mobile gaming - we're going to be doing a 4 camera shoot of the event. So at some point in the future, I'll be posting some photos and vids. Well I'm going to head off to bed to get a few hours of sleep before the crew shows up.
Rue Morgue's staff and readership voted HEAD TRAUMA the best indie feature of 2006
Horrorreview.com named HEAD TRAUMA the #1 film of the year in its annual top 10 list
1.) HEAD TRAUMA (review) As a filmmaker turned critic, I can't help but watch films from the artistic point of view sometimes. Head Trauma may be more of a suspenseful thriller than a horror film. I'm a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock's work, and Head Trauma's director Lance Weiler directed this film like Hitchcock would direct his own movies. Very well written and directed. Head Trauma is my top film of 2006.
Creature Corner named HEAD TRAUMA the #1 film of the year in its annual horror wrapup
1.) HEAD TRAUMA (review) This movie lived up my expectations and passed them. Probably the creepiest film to come out all year. What is it about this film that makes it love it so much? Is it the mood, is it the interesting characters, the clever script? Possibly the fact that they achieved all of this on a shoestring budget and still managed to release theatrically all over the country? All of those.
Twitch named HEAD TRAUMA one of the top 10 experiences of 2006
9.) Head Trauma (Review) Creepy, man, creepy. Kudos to Lance Weiler.
Fatally Yours named HEAD TRAUMA one of the top 10 films of the year - #2 behind the Descent
2.) Head Trauma (Review) - A mind-bending film that keeps you guessing to the end, Head Trauma is filled with dream-like and creepy imagery. It is one of the few horror movies of 2006 that made me jump in my own living room while viewing it. Extra impressive is the fact that it was made on a very limited budget and features many inventive camera angles.
Rue Morgue magazine, one of the world's top horror publications, has named HEAD TRAUMA the best indie feature of 2006! The list is shaped by Rue Morgue staff and the magazine's readership.
Just wanted to give a quick update.

Big thanks to all of you who made it out to Best Buy and picked up copies of HT and TLB. I got word earlier today that Best Buy will be re-ordering, which means we'll be on shelves well into next year.
HT is heading to the big screen again for a special showing in New Orleans next month. As soon as I have more details I’ll post them.

Lastly, the panel I was on at Digimart last month, called “Filmmakers Do It Themselves” is now online. Click here to view the vid.
I just returned from a horror screenwriting conference in Minneapolis. HEAD TRAUMA had a public screening at the Oak Street Cinema, the following are two reviews from the weekly and daily papers. In addition checkout the Nov. issue of Rue Morgue magazine on newsstands now. It has an excellent article and review about HT.
STAR TRIBUNE
HEAD TRAUMA - MOVIE REVIEW by COLIN COVERT - 3 out of 4 stars
This effective, atmospheric chiller seeps into your fear center like damp rot. George Walker, a damaged soul with nowhere to turn, moves into his deceased grandmother's house, hoping to persuade city authorities to let him renovate the place instead of proceeding with their planned demolition.A scuffle with a neighbor, who mistakes the disheveled drifter for an illegal squatter, gives George a bruised head and a steady stream of nightmares involving a murdered girl and a car wreck. Or are they repressed memories, struggling to the surface?
Writer/director Lance Weiler makes Grandma's crumbling house a vivid symbol for George's fractured consciousness, and Vince Mola, a Paul Giamatti type with talent to burn, makes the protagonist both disturbing and sympathetic. The result is a smart, goosefleshy psychological jigsaw puzzle.
CITYPAGES
HEAD TRAUMA movie review by John Behling
Plagued by reoccurring nightmares of a car accident and worn by 20 years of alcoholism and living on the streets, George Walker (Vince Mola) stumbles back into the realm of the living and reclaims his late grandmother’s condemned home. Despite the efforts of a conniving neighbor, Walker attempts to resurrect the house before the city can tear it down, while at the same time trying to put together the pieces of his badly fractured life. This moody indie shocker from writer-director Lance Weiler (The Last Broadcast) walks a careful line between austerity and excess. Some of its hauntingly understated images--an old army tent erected in the gutted-out living room, a submerged cardboard box bubbling in a flooded basement--clash with nightmare visions dominated by a faceless ghost that pushes Walker to the edge of insanity. Like Neil Marshall (The Descent), Weiler is both an impeccable craftsperson and a reverent genre fan, his low-lit digital-video interiors, excellent sound design, and rigorous lack of irony breathing life into the somewhat tired concept. Though Head Trauma has at its core a dark and shocking secret, the real mystery is why a director as promising and talented as Weiler would be limited, at least for now, to the DVD market.

RUE MORGUE - "A WAKING NIGHTMARE" by John W. Bowen
"HEAD TRAUMA, one of this year's most ambitious indpendent films draws upon both real-life tragedy and familiar horror archetypes to fashion a unique psychological thriller. HEAD TRAUMA has a decidedly sinister discomfiture all the way to its elegant and haunting resolution. In the end, it's a gorgeously photographed, refreshingly simple story, well told and well executed."
There is quite a bit to report since the last post.
I did an interview with a large Argentinean radio station today. HEAD TRAUMA is playing at Muestra Internacional de Cine Independiente de Mar del Plata film festival and the response has been very positive - in fact they've added an extra screening to meet demand.
In regards to national press HT will have articles in Millimeter, Rue Morgue, Moviemaker, DV Magazine, Flaunt and Creative Screenwriting starting next month and running through the rest of the year.
HT AND TLB HIT BEST BUYS NATIONWIDE
In some exciting news HEAD TRAUMA and THE LAST BROADCAST will have a special promotion at BEST BUY.
Starting SUNDAY OCTOBER 29 (just in time for Halloween!) through NOVEMBER 11 at all national BEST BUY stores get $5 off when you buy THE LAST BROADCAST together with HEAD TRAUMA.
Please help support indie horror! It's hard getting indie films in to the Best Buys of the world...let's show them it's worth it, and get yourself a double dose of scary, innovative and downright creepy horror!
Both films are also available for rent at NETFLIX, for sale at BORDERS and other fine retail locations throughout the US!
SPEAKING ENGAGEMENT
I'm heading out to LA tomorrow, for a speaking engagement at Film Independent's Filmmaker Forum "Make and Sell your movie without getting screwed." I'm speaking on a panel on Sat 10/28 @ 5:30pm called
New School DIYstribution - New technologies are revolutionizing distribution and giving filmmakers more options to reach audiences and make money selling their films. With web-based marketing, Internet VOD, cell phones, and iPods, is this the beginning of a filmmakers' market?
Should prove to be a good discussion.
UPCOMING SCREENING
I go right from LA to Minneapolis, where I'll be a guest at IFP North's annual screenwriting conference. This year's conference is all about Horror. The conference will kickoff with a screening of HT on Friday Nov. 3rd. The screening is an IFP North/ Fearless Filmmakers event. Click here for more info. So for all of you from the Minneapolis area who have been asking about a way to see HT on the big screen here's your chance.
I'm still buzzing from my experience at digimart this past week. I was invited to speak about the making and distribution of HT. It was an amazing gathering of people from all over the world discussing three things I love - filmmaking, tech and new business models. There was quite a bit of speculation regarding the future of digital content distribution during the three day conference. Variety was on hand to cover the event.
I brought the newest prototype of the IndEx media server with me. On Monday night digimart held a special screening of HT. IndEx is a low cost exhibition solution that will be released later this year. It is meant to be simple and it is. I've been using it for a lot of my digital runs. For the digimart screening we used IndEx with a 2k projector. The result was a true HD screening with full 6 channel surround. It looked and sounded amazing.

This weekend I'll be driving to Montreal for Digimart a digital distribution summit. I've been invited to speak about the making and distribution of HT. There will also be an all-digital screening of HT via the IndEx media server. As I mentioned before the quality of the IndEx is amazing - in my opinion it's better than screening with an HD CAM deck. The IndEx is meant to be a cost effective screening solution for filmmakers, theaters and film festivals. It will hit the market later this fall.
More about Digimart - "Digimart operates an annual digital cinema market that provides business and networking opportunities for the global film industry. Digimart is an innovative forum for the dissemination of film and the promotion of independent production using new digital delivery, distribution and exhibition tools. Digimart is determined to remain at the forefront of the digital revolution and to provide stimulating industry activities and services to film professionals from around the world."
HT will be screening at Muestra Internacional de Cine Independiente de Mar del Plata film festival in Argentina this month. For more info click here. This is HT's third festival appearance. So far we've screened at the LA Film Festival and Darklight in Dublin.
Later this month I'll be headed back to LA for another Film Independent (FIND) event called "Make and sell your film without getting screwed." I'll be speaking on a panel called "New School DIYstribution" Sat. Oct. 28th 5pm to 6:30pm visit the FIND site for more info.
There are some other exciting things in development, which I'll be announcing next week.
