Film Maker's Blog

Update June 9 2008 Jun 09, 2008 06:39AM
Well, this is the last blog entry I will write from my home in Campbell's Bay -- we're moving to Renfrew, Ontario, Canada (yay!). Tomorrow the movers come in, the next day they unpack at the new place, and the next day after that I had scheduled our re-shoot and Additional Dialogue Recording date. Nothing like testing things out to the max. Originally our move date was supposed to be last week, but that got pushed back. Faithful blog readers, do keep fingers crossed and say a prayer for us... not only that our re-shoot and ADR goes smoothly on June 12, but moreso because I have submitted Searching For the Big One to a few film festivals. Since this is my first time, I am dreaming big and hoping our little project gets selected. Like I said, wish us luck! I'll keep you posted on what happens next... John
Update May 6 2008 May 06, 2008 06:07AM
Well, hello: To start off with, for the last two weeks my computer has not been showing frames or javascript properly. I don't know why - it is a pain in the a**. We have put in an application to the Toronto International Film Festival Group. I know it's a long shot, but fingers are crossed. It would be really cool to have our submission accepted. Luca has been really hard at work and has done a marvellous job of editing, rendering, editing, more rendering... and on and on. I am grateful for his technical expertise. We are going to do re-shoot work and ADR on May 17 08. The challenge is that our principals have changed in appearance, naturally, since it has been almost a year since we last shot (alright, 10 months). As producer, I am still getting a real rush out of all the work involved - this is a good sign.
Scene 10 part One Oct 30, 2007 06:00PM

I had a lovely afternoon with Luca today looking at and editing the material for the first part of scene 10. I would like to call this particular blog entry "In Praise of Mihajlo and Ella Rose". As I watched the takes, I could only marvel at how well both actors gave their performances. I got so into it, I forgot I was watching a movie -- set in a small little box on Luca's computer -- a movie which I had a large creative role in. Rather, I was watching two incredible performances that were so captivating.

One thing I did learn today was the I should have divided scenes a bit better. As Luca commented, scene 10 is the longest scene in the script, and could have nay, should have been cut into at least four separate scenes. A lot happens in this particular scene. Key character development takes place, Julie - played by Ella - goes off set to fetch some milk and munchies, Mike and Julie get to know each other better, and they meet John the Bible dude. Like I said, a lot for one scene. Chalk it up to learning.

So, Luca has his marching orders for what I would like to see in terms of edits, plus he has some good ideas of his own to suggest. I will be off to Eastern Europe for a couple of weeks, and look forward to seeing the scene when I get back. To Ella Rose and Mihajlo, all I can say is You guys rock!. In my books you're superstars!

Editing the masterpiece Oct 18, 2007 12:40PM

I met with Luca F., the cinematographer and editor of Searching for the Big One . He showed me the editing work he has done so far, and I must say I am well pleased with it. He has scenes one through nine done... and they look good. Watching the film reminded me of the great fun we had in making in. At present, what with the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the making of the film seems like such a distant memory. It's almost like it's someone else that wrote the script, did the production work, cast the actors, scouted locations, and directed. I have to say I both envy and salute those who work on film projects from day to day.

I often think of Steven Soderbergh's Oscar acceptance speech; the year he won for Traffic. He got up on stage, indicated that he would thank those that needed to be thanked personally, and then he went on -- and this is the part that moved me -- he went on to dedicate the award to all those who have done something creative today! In my more philosophical moments, I think of all the creative people in the world. Take my friend Luca - editor and cinematographer par extraordinaire. I got to visit his work space today -- not only does he do movie related things but he also does music. Literally, he makes music! He played me a song that he and fellow band mate Eva produced -- they work as the band Ennuie. It's awesome! Imagine how there are billions of creative people like that in the world...

If we focussed on that creativity, I think the world would be a better place.

In the meantime, I look forward to focussing on my own creative work. Luca and I will be getting together hopefully next week to do some more editing work.

An open blog message to Madonna Oct 10, 2007 07:53AM

On the off chance that Madonna -- yes, THE multi-talented artist -- browses the net and googles blogs, I am writing the following as a request.

Dear Madonna: I am a huge fan and admirer of your artistic abilities as a performer, musician, writer, and cultural auteur. I would love to meet you one day to shake your hand and say thanks. But, that's not why I am writing...

See, Madonna, I am making this little low budget movie called Searching for the Big One. It's a character driven movie about two people who get together, ostensibly to have a fling; except, they don't for a number of reasons. Some parts of the film are funny, whereas other parts are more dramatic. I see the film as a "slice of life" type thing. If you get a chance to see it, I think you'll like it.

The film stars two Ottawa, Ontario, Canada based actors. Both Mihajlo Kos and Ella Rose Swinimer put in phenomenal performances, as did the other cast members: Carolynn Roberts-Barnes and David Campbell. We shot the film in five days on a very micro-level budget of about $5,000.00 Canadian. This was my first effort at a feature film, and things went super well. Right now, we are in post production, which is why I am writing to you via the Internet.

You see Madonna, one of my most favourite songs is Drowned World: Substitute for Love. (And, for others who are reading this blog entry, you can find a video for the song by checking out the link below...

I think you really like this song too. It is very beautiful, and I get the sense that for you, it conveys part of your spirit and what you value in life. Madonna, I would like to use this song -- or a cover version of it -- in the movie. But, sadly, I can't afford to pay large amounts of money to get the rights, or even hire a music supervisor to try. So, Madonna, I am writing this blog entry to appeal to your kindness and generosity to allow me to use the song -- you can even see a rough edit of the film before you say yes or no -- and I would pay for the rights after (or, should I say if) my film makes money. Hopefully, there is some way of being able to negotiate something which both respects your song and your creative talent, and my need to include this song in Searching for the Big One.

What do you say Madonna?

Signed, a great Admirer of your work

JOHN

am I a sell out? Aug 21, 2007 12:52PM

Okay people - call me a sell out if you want, but I am posting a Google AdSense ad here on this blog in the hope that those who read it -- that means you! might click it and thereby generate a bit of revenue for me. I need to pay off the debt from making this film. So please, click away:

thanks !!!

post-partum depression Aug 11, 2007 11:23AM

It's been over a month now that we have finished shooting. Exactly one month and one day ago we were at the Silver Dollar - and I was feeling exhilirated, yet tired. My film -- though in digital format -- was "in the can". I liked the feeling.

Now is the time of "post". I have seen the dailies and by and large they look good. I know too that the editor, Luca Furgiuele, has transferred everything onto his harddrive but has been very very busy with other projects and hasn't had much time to do editing. Last time I asked him, he said that the fall was a good deadline for a first edit. I can live with that. In the meantime, I am experiencing something weird: I don't know whether to pick up on one of my other projects, do some writing, or just kick back and relax. In some ways, I would like to do all three! But, sadly, in other ways, I have little energy to do any of it. So, for those of you on the audience.withoutabox.com pages, what did you do after you finished shooting your first (or most recent) film???

Enquiring minds would like to know.

The shoot - a retrospective... Jul 12, 2007 07:25AM

We started shooting at just after 9:00 a.m. on Friday July 6th. The day was beautiful - absolutely gorgeous!  We started off with David Campbell, playing John the Bible Guy and Mihajlo Kos, as Mike the male lead character in the film.  The scene was a moment of confrontation when Mike and John run into each other on a road.  With the exception of some good neighbours in the community  -  who were most curious as to what we were doing (and wanted to shake my hand in the event I became famous ) and airplanes taking off from MacDonald-Cartier Airport, that first part of the shoot went well.  I think we did about three or four takes.

In the latter part of the morning, we started doing the scenes when "John" interrupts Mike and Julie, played by Ottawa-based actor Ella Rose Swinimer.  We did several set-ups:  in the process we discovered that Mihajlo wears "kelly green" underwear available exclusively at American Apparel. I am sure we will get some pics up on this website (our own exclusive preview).

After David Campbell wrapped, we did the beginning slash intro shots of the film:  Julie walking in for the first time, Mike and Julie coming in, etc...

Day Two began at 9:00 a.m.  We did some of the critical shots in the script.  The first shot of the day was scene 10 - one of the longest in the script.  It took several tries, but I think we got things right.  At the end of the day we were bang on in terms of the shooting schedule (yay!).  I wear sandals and sockettes today - which apparently is a bad fashion faux pas.  (Ella Rose has a shot of it on her Facebook photo album which you can see here.

Day Three begins at 8:30 a.m.  We got the "guerilla style" shots at Tim Hortons.  I am actually surprised at how much we get done today.  We broke for lunch and had Chinese Food -- yummy!  As Mihajlo pointed out to us though, in China, it's just called "Food".

Day Four begins at 10:00 a.m.  It was supposed to begin an hour before, but my back and neck are just killing me.  It's a slow moving morning.  We cross the street to do scene 13 - the "let's go for a walk and get some air" scene.  Ella Rose and Mihajlo play the scene perfectly.  What I admire most is Luca Furgiuele's (our DP's) ability to walk backward for a long time...  for that matter, sound guy Igor Ivanov can also do well at the backward walk.  We decide to film the bathroom scenes at my house;  our bathroom is much bigger (and cleaner  );  so the shoot will continue on Tuesday.  After Igor helped me clean out the rooms, I returned the keys.  The guy at the motel asked me if we were shooting a movie similar (i.e. "just like") the Dr. Phil Show.  How does one answer that?

Day Five:  This day was originally added on to shoot scene 30, a scene set in a strip club.  Ken Mole at the Silver Dollar was extremely accommodating to us.  Ella Rose - as Julie - did very well at dancing.  Our stills photographer, Ryan McAwesome and Samantha Everts played the roles of extras at the bar -- so did I...  I figured I might as well appear in the film somewhere, and since I cannot act, this seemed like a good place to start.  In the afternoon, Barb Stopa got our bathroom set up to look like a motel bathroom - only problem is that the bathroom looks better than the motel room did.  In the evening, after a round of burgers, we shot the "let's pretend Julie and Mike get married" sequence/montage as well as the bathroom scenes.  I am again, in awe of the ability of cast and crew to get things done so well!

Now comes the harder part - we were able to shoot in 5 days and on a budget of roughly $4,000.00.  Luca Furgiuele will be editing the scenes -- he says he will be ready by the fall.  Having a rough cut by then would be good (no pressure intended Luca).  We also have to do ADR.  And if I can afford it, and if I can convince Ella Rose and one of my piano playing friends, I would like to include a cover of Madonna's "Substitute for Love/Drowned World".  What then?  Festivals maybe.  I look forward to sharing the resultant film with all the world.

I changed my mind Jul 02, 2007 11:28AM

So - I had this really sleepless night last week. What kept me awake was the decision NOT to use an HD Camera to film. It struck me that I would regret this in the long run. For the length of time I needed it, it was worth shelling out the $bucks to do it right. So, I was back on MSN with Luca and told him to call the rental place again and rebook the equipment, which he's done.

So, I am now in the proverbial calm before the proverbial "storm" of production. I remember a professor of mine - who taught Judaism but who also ran a production company called LRS Trimark [his name was Eugene Rothman] - anyway, he told us students that as a producer, every dollar spent in pre-production saved 10 in production. His reason for telling us this was that we should spend a lot of time getting ready to write the essay, and thus spend less time writing. Anyway, I ramble... I hope I have spent enough in pre-production to at least get things right.

I am a little concerned that I have not heard back from one of my actors in a while... more on this as it unfolds. I hope he is getting his e-mails, plans to be on set, and is just really busy right now with other stuff and therefore hard to reach. Worries, worries, worries...

Happy CANADA Day to my Canadian friends, and Happy 4th of July to you folks in the US. May the days of celebration be happy and safe ones... well, at least make sure the cops don't get called.

A la prochaine...

some news Jun 20, 2007 06:39PM

Hello all: Just a note to all budding cinematographers and actors, here's a chance to win $3,000.00 which is no chump change. Bytecasters is looking for submissions; read on at http://bytecaster.com/contests/presentation.

I can't remember if I mentioned it before, and so if this is a repeat of info, please forgive me; but, Luca and I have decided to stick with the Canon GL2 camera for our shoot. It's versatile enough and we have access to two of them - for free! Yay! Luca, Igor and I met last week to talk about specifics re: cinematography and sound. I have a lot of confidence in these two men. I think they are really capable. Luca, for one, has been putting a lot of thought into how the shots will look and what he will need for proper lighting, etc. Igor has also given thought as to how he will capture the sounds (ambient as well as direct).

Lastly, found out that the motel has changed its name to New Highway Inn Motel.

John
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! Jun 04, 2007 12:23PM

SO - it looks like we will be filming at a motel called the King Slumber Motel at 2279 Hwy 16, Nepean, ON . Luca and I met up with Ali who works there a few weeks ago. He was outside trying to rid the front yard of all the dandellions. I liked it that he was reluctant to use any herbicides and chemicals in his own personal war on weeds. There he was with a small trowel taking care of business. I tried to convince him that dandelions will eventually go away - if memory serves they don't tolerate the heat of a July and August summer's day. I also told him some people make dandelion wine, at which point, without missing a beat, Ali invited me to help myself to as many of the flowers as I might need to make some of the wine... I respectfully declined the offer. Luca went back to see him last week and was told there was no problem about renting to us. Yay!!!

The room that we were shown was very basic; nothing fancy about it at all. It seems like the kind of place that Mike and Julie might meet up. The walls are bare and are made out of cinder block. The bathroom is at the end of the room. The centre of the room is the bed; which is also the centre of focus for the film. Luca will probably face some challenges around the issue of lighting, especially for the bathroom area. I am sure we can work something out. I think the blue/grey tinge of the room will add something to the atmosphere of the film. This is not about a happy romance after all. The emptiness of the room, the lack of decor, further serves aesthetic and practical purposes: we don't have to go through the rigamarole of getting clearances for any work that is copyrighted and we can allow the room to reflect the emptiness that both Julie and Mike feel in their personal searches for the "big one".

The other strong point about the Slumber King Motel is that right next door to it is a Tim Horton's. For those who don't know about it, Tim Horton's is a mainstay of Canadian culture - though it is now American owned. The best coffee and donuts come from Tim's, and there's a Tim Horton's at nearly every other block. "You've always got time for Tim Horton's!" Well, I know we do. The beginning of the film calls for both Julie and Mike to go in separately to Tim's on their way to the motel where they will meet up. The drive way to the Slumber King (or is that King Slumber?) motel is shared alongside with the Tim Horton's restaurant on Prince of Wales/Old Highway 16. Perfect! Now, all we need to do is get permission from Tim Horton's to film on their premises. I wonder if we can go in overnight and shoot that, when there is less people around. Fingers are crossed... be nice to us Tim Horton!

On a concluding note, Luca has his own webpage which can be found at www.lucafurgiuele.com. Why not check it out? With his creative abilities, Luca is going to go very far in the world - why not be one of the people who can honestly say I remember when he just started out...?

two blogs worth quoting May 27, 2007 05:57PM

Both from Movie Maker magazine:

both focus on things learned by/from cinematographers...

la vraie misere May 23, 2007 07:50PM

Well - the search for a motel room continues on. Luca and I have seen several places, all more or less perfect for the shoot. We speak with employees. Explain what we are doing... Assure them it's not porn... Check out the room to see its dimensions... Leave a card... and wait to hear back from them.

and nothing happens... No one has called us back yet to say sure, we'd love to let you use our facilities.

I am starting to wonder if we should go really "guerilla style" and just book two rooms somewhere at a motel, and say absolutely nothing about why we plan to use the space. Oy vey! Must it be that difficult to find a place to shoot?????

On another note, have you checked out our Yahoo group and tried the two polls we got going? Check the last blog posting here for a link...

First Read through of Principals completed... and on the look out May 03, 2007 01:47PM

First off, we've started another blog -- yes another one -- on MySpace.com. Our blog here on WithoutABox serves to record production note information and other technical stuff. This newer blog will have more general information as well as reflections on some of the themes we look at in the movie Searching for the Big One .

Ella Rose, Mihajlo and I met up last Friday to do a read through of the main parts of the script. Most of it is pretty good. There are a few sections that need to be spruced up. A poem called The Stripper will be edited out, and Ella Rose has offered to create a poem in its place. A funny moment in the read through was when we came to a part in the script where the principal characters sing a parody refrain to the tune of Go Down Moses (aka Let my People Go). Mihajlo sang it to the tune of Old MacDonald Had a Farm: very creative e.i.e.i,o.

One of these days I will finalize the main location. I have a motel in mind -- the issue is do a make a reservation and say nothing to the manager/owner about wanting to shoot a movie on their premises... that is, do it real guerilla style... OR do I go above board and make my pitch about wanting to use the property for a micro budget feature being shot over an extended weekend. Any suggestions, folks?

After the read through, we also noted a need to find a strip joint we can use - during off hours of course - for a brief time. Both Ella and Mihajlo had some suggestions which we can hopefully build upon.

Well that's about it for now... onward and upward we go.

Touching Base on a Beautifully Sunny Friday afternoon Apr 20, 2007 02:41PM

Well, for the second or third day in a row, it has been absolutely beautiful here in town. This is quite the contrast to earlier in the week when there was snow on the ground in some parts of eastern Canada and the United States. Glad to see the sun -- and the warm weather here with us!

A few things to update on the pre-production front. A website has been set up for the movie: it can be found at www.searchingforthebigone.com . Right now there is not much to it. But that will change as production gears up -- and certainly in post production.

On Monday, the 23rd, Luca and I will be going to meet the folks at SAW Video. We hope to rent some camera equipment from them, and hope too to have a great working relationship with them. SAW's reputation is a good one here in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. Luca and I will also be doing some location scouting.

Lastly, I have been listening to the book-on-CD version of Robert McKee's work about script writing Story. In listening to it, I felt inspired to re-watch the movie Chinatown, a flick I haven't seen in over a decade. Talk about a well crafted movie!!! I also an reading the script by Robert Towne; a great site to check out is Simply Scripts . It's worth checking out --

Well, I guess that is it for now

Male lead has been cast - change in film dates - sound crew member Apr 10, 2007 04:55AM

Ottawa, Ontario Canada based actor Mihajlo Kos has been cast in the role of Mike, the male lead character searching for the big answer in Searching for the Big One. This is Mihajlo's first lead role.

We have also had to set the shoot date back from the Victoria Day weekend (May 18-21) to the first weekend in July (July 6 to 9) because of some scheduling conflicts. It's a bit of a drag since we were pumped and primed to shoot in May, but the extra time gives us more time for pre-production... and as a producer once wisely told me: "A dollar in pre-production saves ten in production".

Lastly, we are happy to announce that Igor Ivanov will be looking after sound. Igor is a film buff and has directed movies of his own -- we are glad to have him as part of the team.

Nest step in pre-production: one of the most important now that casting and crew have been taken care of: LOCATION. We need to find a motel that will accomodate us -- though we are a small crew as far as productions go. One clincher will be that the price has to be right- we are, after all, on a microbudget. Wish us luck folks...

An update to my blog entry about the casting of the role of Beth... Mar 26, 2007 02:40PM

Okay... for some reason it is impossible -- or seems impossible -- to go back in to a blog entry to add a photograph. So, with apologies to Carolynn and to set the record right, above you will find a picture of Carolynn Roberts-Barnes, who has been cast to play the role of Beth.

Role of John has been cast Mar 26, 2007 02:32PM

The role of John, a member of a fictional group called The Bible People has been cast. David Campbell of Ottawa will be playing the part. We had a lot of good auditions for the part and it was a difficult decision to narrow down the actors to one. We are happy to have Dave as part of the production. He brings a real creativity to the part, and it was that aspect of his style that really caught our attention in the audition.

Casting continues... now for the decisions Mar 23, 2007 04:25PM
Thanks to all the incredible actors who auditioned for the roles of Mike, John and Beth. Now it's time to make some tough decisions... Carolynn Roberts-Barnes has been cast in the role of Beth. Carolynn captured the busy body/folksy nature of Beth the motel owner. Decisions will be made this weekend (March 24-25) about call backs and castings for the other characters. To the actors who presented themselves THANK YOU! I wish I could hire you all - and would love to work with each of you sometime in the future. We have a lot of talent in our midst!
Casting sessions in Toronto Mar 06, 2007 08:50AM

We will be in Toronto next Monday and Tuesday to conduct auditions for the parf of Mike. We've received very good response from a variety of actors -- not only for the part of Mike, the male lead, but also for the supporting roles of John - a member of a group called the "Bible People" -- and his cousin Beth - who owns the motel where the lead characters meet for their tryst. As Director and Producer, and here, I add the qualifier of being a real first timer, I am humbled by the talent and interest received. To you who are actors out there reading this - all I can say is I am so grateful and in awe of the ability shows in the craft of acting. I used to take actors for granted - but the process of casting has seriously opened my eyes to the life of an actor, especially of an actor in Canada. CANADIAN ACTORS: YOU ROCK!!!

On another note, we have managed to procure an M2 Lens Adapter by Redrock and will be trying it out this weekend. The use of this equipment comes at the suggestion of Luca Furgiuele, our cinematographer. The M2 uses a film lens and gives the video a film look. I so hope it works out well.

Casting notices out... and some thoughts on the Oscars Feb 26, 2007 11:10AM
We've posted up the casting notices, which can be found at Mandy.com Responses have been good. It looks like we will be holding an audition in Toronto... which seems to be a town with a LOT of talent. Now, on to the Oscars. I have to admit that I am an Oscar ceremonies junkie. One of my dreams is to attend the awards ceremony in person - to be part of the glitz and glamour. I was not surprized by any of the winners yesterday... other than the win by Allan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine which I think he deserved. I was glad too that Forrest Whittaker won - his acceptance speech shows how much of an artist and gentleman he really is. On Ellen Degeneris as host - well, some of her jokes were good... but I have to say I missed Billy Crystals' patented opening numbers or Chris Rock's political whit. Lastly, congrats to Martin Scorcese for finally being recognized properly by the Academy. Maybe we could do lunch sometime, Mr. Scorcese?
ho hum.... Feb 01, 2007 11:24AM
It's February 1 - the day before the groundhog is supposed see or not see his shadow. Why are groundhogs always male? Today's one of those days where I am doubting everything. My confidence level is really low; and I am second guessing things. From an artistic standpoint, it's not a really comfortable situation to be in. I hope it passes soon... I welcome stories of encouragement from the Without A Box community. John
Female Lead Cast - The Search is on for a male lead Jan 10, 2007 11:12AM
Ella Rose Swinimer, an Ottawa based model and actor, has signed on to play the female lead character Julie in Searching for the Big O. Ella possesses both great talent and beauty and will really make the character of Julie come alive on the screen. For more information about Ella, check out her webpage . The search is now on for an actor to play the male lead, Michael. We're looking for an actor in the 25 to 30 age range. For more information, please e-mail the producer at john@interquel.com.
Cinematographer Found Jan 10, 2007 10:21AM
We now have a cinematographer for the shoot. He is Luca Furgiuele, an Ottawa-based video artist and musician. You can see a sample of Luca's work as both cinematographer and editor by checking out this link As producer, I think the project is fortunate to have Luca. He brings both knowledge and enthusiasm. He also has lots of connections - always a help. On another note, we are still on the lookout for a male lead (aged 25-30). Notices will be posted on ACT Ottawa (www.actottawa.com) and on IMDB Pro. Also, I had my first meeting with a potential investor last night - it went well and a commitment to fund was made... WOO HOO!
Merry Christmas! Dec 25, 2006 01:32PM
Just wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and best wishes for a very successful and creative 2007!!!!
So i want to make a film... Dec 08, 2006 02:22PM
I watched The WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN the other day, a film I really enjoyed well. I have to say that the premise of the film really touched me - here was a guy who despite several odds against him went on to realize his dream. As quirky as it sounds, I am hoping to do the same - to realize a dream I have had for decades. I would like to make a film... and I have begun work on making my dream real too. I may be doing things a bit back asswards, but I hope to see success. I've read as much as I can about filmmaking, and know that there are many hurdles. So be it. As Robert McKee would maybe say, a story is made up of a lot of conflicts -- the conflicts faced, and the way they are faced, tell something of the character of a person. I am therefore hoping that in working out and realizing this dream, I may be able to learn something more about myself too. Enough philosophizing... The project I am hoping to see to its end is called Searching for the Big O. It is the story of two people who get together for a one night stand, but have to face a lot of their personal hangups and challenges. Both characters have their own baggage that needs to be dealt with <- sorry to dangle a preposition. I am working on the third draft of the script... I suspect that the re-drafting process will continue on virtually to the last minute, and even then may carry on. I am happy to say that Ella Rose, an Ottawa based model and actress, has agreed to play the part of Julie. For more information about Ella Rose, please check out http://member.onemodelplace.com/member.cfm?ID=116906 and/or http://pro.imdb.com/name/nm1906709/. I am very happy to have Ella Rose on board for this project - she is a woman of great talent and great beauty! I have some leads on camera operator - I have my own camera, a Canon GL-2, and will also need someone in charge of sound. Casting for the male lead will happen in the New year of 2007. Then it's time to do some serious pre-production work. I hope to shoot over the May long weekend - yes, a full shoot over 3-4 days ->it can be done! I am inspired by a Canadian movie called Blood, which shot over the same length of time. My last hope is to accomplish this shoot and fulfill the dream on a budget of $5,000.00 So, with my fingers crossed and hopes high, I begin to live out the dream... John

Hi -- I came across a write up about WAB in the fall issue of Filmmaker. This seems to be the type of website I have been looking for, and am delighted to be here.

I live in Canada, and like to think of myself as an aspiring filmmaker. To date, I do not have any completed projects that I can put online. But I am working on a few. I have done some photographic work, which interestingly enough has taught me a lot about how the image tells a story. I enjoy writing as well, and am exploring creative possibilities in that vein too.

This is also my first time ever doing a blog... so bear with me. I guess a newbie all around :-).

Hey George - thanks for your posting. I really appreciate the words of encouragement. I think I know what you mean about feeling right about something - I have definitely felt that "rightness" about things during the audition process... I know what I want in this film.
Like you, I too could talk film 24/7 -- it's a great addiction to have.

Hey, hope your confidence level has risen since your Feb. 1 post. Sounds like things are coming together for you. I'm fifty and made a movie last year and it still amazes me. I always had confidence in my creative skills but it took the right circumstances to bring it out in film form. I met a young guy who had made a bunch of shorts. I watched them and thought, I can write a screenplay, so I did. It just came out of me and then it became a feature. I didn't know squat about making a movie but I don't remember ever feeling as confident as I did during the rehearsals. I just knew what I wanted. The thing that worked so well for us (I think, anyway) was the constant use of improv. The actors really became their characters and it was extremely helpful come shoot time. Drop me a line so we can talk film stuff. I could talk about filmmaking 24/7. george.gamard@gmail.com. I'm on WAB under, "Don't Talk So Dumb." The nick is Burnley.......my hated middle name.

    Best regards,
