Jessie:

Curious to know what you will do with your screenplay once it is finished. Are you going to submit it to screenplay festivals or make a film? If you haven't thought about making a film then I would encourage you to reconsider. There are so many talented people out there (some who even own cameras and lighting) that would be thrilled to shoot your film. I didn't know squat about making a movie but had the great fortune to meet our eventual Director who shot the film and did all the editing and computer stuff. He is leaving the area though so I will rely on the local paper and Craig's List to find a new Director for my next film. I now know that there are a lot of talented people out there who would jump at the chance to make a film and you and I, as screenplay writers, are the beginning of all of that. I think I told you that Don't Talk So Dumb was made on a $1,000.00 budget but I have seen good feature indies made on less than $200 so it's all there to do. I'll check for your blog updates.

Good luck with your screenplay. It seems like a difficult yet rewarding process. Do you film your own work or do you just like to write?

Congrats on getting started. Everybody finds that they enjoy one part of the film making process more than the others. Mine is definitely writing so I'm excited for you.

As long as you remember that the story is the most important thing, you'll be fine. Everyone will tell you how they think you should do it. You should listen to everyone but only do what feels right.

Here's my two cents.

When you hit a point in your story that seems "clumpy" to you - something that isn't coming out the way you want it to, just write it some way that gets the point across for you and keep moving. Get the basis of the story down from start to finish, even if parts don't feel quite right yet. Once you've done that, start reading it through at least once a day. Those clumpy parts will stick out like a sore thumb to you and that will allow you to tackle them one at a time.

Best of luck to you in your screenwriting endeavors! The one piece of advice that I can give you is to write what you like and believe in it. To hell with trying to write something to please the largest audience. Bob Dylan tried that on his first album and it was a bust. The he wrote what he liked and the rest is history. Nike gets all the credit but I could swear I said it first - Just do it! But you are so good for you.
