Film Production Blog "deathofthedinosaurs"
Time flies..
Mar 11, 2008 07:40PM
Well.. it's been a while and it's been a blast marketing Death of the Dinosaurs.
The film did so well on the festival circuit. I still love watching it and am really greatful that my first effort towards filmmaking paid off so well... but then again, I've always been lucky.
Here's a link to the OTTfilms filmography page with our laurels from the fests we got into.
http://www.ottfilms.co.uk/filmography/death_of_the_dinosaurs.html
We also sold the film to a TV production company for one of their programmes. We didn't make a profit but recouped all the production and marketing costs and got ourselves a broadcast credit.
The film is also on the fourteenth Raindance shorts DVD and on Raindance.TV

Happy days. Everybody say roar! ;)

Mar 25, 2007 06:05PM
Death of the Dinosaurs has been selected for the London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film!
Along with our sister film Tarot this is the second OTTfilm to be screened at the festival which selected only 15. That's a really good result for OTTfilms!!
We're looking forward to the festival and hope all the cast and crew of both films can come along so come down and meet us if you're in town at the beginnning of May!

Dinosaurs at World of Comedy Toronto!
Mar 16, 2007 10:10AM
Death of the Dinosaurs proudly screened at the World of Comedy film festival in Toronto, Canada this month. We received some great feedback after the event and have been invited to submit to participate in other screening events and festivals.
Happy times!

And Death of the Dinosaurs has also been selected to be screened at the Faux Film Festival in Portland, Oregon. Portland has apparently been rated the number two city in the USA for independent filmmaking by Movie Maker Magazine so the film will no doubt be amongst good company. Not least of which is our sister film Tarot which was written and directed by John Condon, writer of Death of the Dinosuars!

Death of the Dinosaurs is a 15 second short made for the 2006 Raindance Nokia shorts competition. Writer, Director and Crew came together through filmmaking collaborative group OTTfilms. www.ottfilms.co.uk
The initial idea was to use toy dinosaurs, which would remain quite static, and then add movement in the camera shots to make the whole come to life. It was decided however to go for stop motion as opposed to camera movements when some very expressive faced and moveable toy dinosaurs were found. The first step was the FX tests. From stills Gus Martinez assembled a test using distortion, which worked well. The film shot in one day (approx 8 hours inc. set up) It was decided to keep the background simple due to the 15 seconds length to give an overall clean look to the film. Green felt and blue paper were put together with a bonsai tree (a 30 year old maple) and a couple of ferns to provide the landscape. Extra help was provided by OTTfilms members Kevin Magee and Marc Knapton in the form of dedolights and dinosaur spit. We shot in HDV using a Sony A1. The edit took place that week and was a precise and intricate job for so small a film. A cut that worked and best served the script was agreed and the FX and grading began. Distortion was used in the form of a partial morph to make the dinosaurs move blink and speak. The film was then graded and using masks and chroma key the original blue sky was graded and moving clouds introduced. The sound design and voiceover took place later. The background atmosphere was designed to suit a hot savannah and foley added including grass chewing and dinosaur footsteps. The Gigantasaurus roar was put together using a mixture of sounds including bear and dear noises. Actor Tony came to record the voiceover for the small dinosaur and director. The whole came together and Death of the Dinosaurs was complete. We hope you like it!! Some photographs from the shoot.

Sci-Fi London..
May 06, 2007 06:28PM
Just spent a good evening at Sci-Fi London where Death of the Dinosaurs and Tarot were screened.. saw some other great films too! We were also given free tickets for 28 weeks later.. very good indeed! A fun evening all round and great because it's the first festival that I've actually been able to attend! I really want to write my zombie movie now.. but I've got another couple of projects to finish first.. damn my schedule!!
Dinosaurs and Dark Matter!
Mar 16, 2007 10:33AM
Wow.. Death of the Dinosaurs has been such an amazing experience. Following on from the BIFA nomination we've been selected to screen at festivals all over the world and have even been invited to submit for free to some of them who heard of the film by word of mouth. I'm just constantly amazed by how exciting it all is!
In the meanwhile work is continuing on my second film Edna and the Dark Matter which is a 2d animation. It's going slowly as animator Andrew is doing it in what little spare time he can manage (after animating in his job all day) and we're taking our time with the plot and characters, trying to make adjustments and add in bits and bobs that will make it special. So hopefully more news on that in due course!
The British Independant Film Awards!
Dec 01, 2006 05:40PM
Well, we didn't win the British Independant Film Award but it was a blast being nominated! And sitting in that room because of a 15 second film, alongside the likes of Ken Loach, Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent (among many other champions of independant film), I felt truly humble and grateful for the talent and passion that overcomes the obstacles of independant filmmaking and makes the magic that we see on our screens each year! I am truly fortunate to have gotten to do the things I did this year. Long live British (and all other nations) Independant film!!
Death of the Dinosaurs
Sep 14, 2006 10:30AM
Well here we are! I don't really know how I got here. I'm an actress by profession. And last year began to write. I spent the majority of my acting career in the theatre but fell in love with film when I joined collaborative filmmaking group OTTfilms based in London. The ethos of the group is in bringing filmmakers together and sharing skills, advice and equipment to help one another make films. It works on a "reap what you sow" basis and it works well. I joined to act and write but soon found myself in love with a script called Death of the Dinosaurs and encouraged by writer John Condon I found myself directing. Since then I've gone on to produce a couple of films, act in a couple, write some and am embarking on directing another animation, this time with one of my own scripts Edna and the Dark Matter. In the meantime I continue to act and write. Death of the Dinosaurs is being submitted here and there and we shall wait and see what happens. However well it does in festival land I'm glad I made this film and I love it! And I get to say "I made a dinosaur flick this year!".. which sounds kinda cool!

I'm still getting the swing of this withoutabox thing. Waiting for the techies to sort out the technical hitch they had uploading the film. In the meantime you can watch the film on www.myspace.com/deathofthedinosaurs all 15 seconds of fun. And I've updated the Death of the Dinosaurs audience page. Enjoy!
