Eyes Close Behind the Camera Aug 02, 2007 09:10AM
Last night, a few of us went to see the Bergman double feature at the New Beverly that included "The Virgin Spring" and "Wild Strawberries" A good number of Bergman admirers showed up, many straining as they tried desperately to see the sometimes translucent subtitles over each other. Didn't think I could stomach such intensity at double the rate, but it was a knockout to watch those two films, back to back. After the film, we discussed the experience and commented on the passing of Ingmar Bergman and Michaelangelo Antonioni. These very two directors have always been a huge influence on us as filmmakers. In fact, it was Antonioni's "L'Eclisse" that inspired many of the visual concepts for "The Moonlit Road" I hope that the recent news catches the eye of those unfamiliar with these two cinema legends and that maybe it spurs people to discover some of their titles. They are each part of a rare experience that is hard to compare to much of what is released today. Ingmar and Michaelangelo, you will be missed.
