ScribbleKing.com INTERVIEW Filmmakers Oscar Sanders and Robert Hill (April 2, 2007) Apr 03, 2007 07:05PM
INTERVIEW: Independent Filmmakers Oscar Sanders and Robert Hill Malcolm Entertainment is a New York based independent movie production company that consists of two good friends, Oscar Sanders and Robert Hill, who came up with the idea to start making movies together in 1995. Since then, they have make two successful short movies, that they have travelled the world with to movie festivals, and right now they are in production of their first feature length film. Oscar and Robert are a good example of people who have a big passion for film, and who are more than willing to spend their time and money on making their films, the way they want to. Q: Were you already interested in movies and making movies when you were still young, or is it something that came later in your life? Oscar: In 1977 I was making movies with a Super 8 camera (Four of them). They starred family and friends and was a big hit with the neighborhood. My desire to make films was put on hiatus after 1984 until 2005. Robert: As a youngster I dreamed of being a movie star. Movie making was the result of my dream of wanting to star in my own movies. I was making Super 8 movies as a kid, too. Q: When did you decide to start making movies together? Was it an idea that you had already thought of for a long time? Or was it something that came only later? Oscar: In 1995, Bob and I began talking about our mutual desires to make films and it eventually progressed to the idea to make them together. Robert: Oscar and I was talking about making movies for a long time and we decided to put our talents together and make it happen. Q: What was it like to make your first short movie together? Did everything go as you had planned beforehand? Oscar: It was a total blast. There was so much anticipation during the script writing process and pre-production. We used non-actors, so everybody involved in the film was bubbling with excitement. They couldn’t wait to begin. Robert: Nothing went the way we planned it. We had problems with the actors, problems with the shooting scheduling because of others and also myself. I was out of town a lot and had to fly in on the weekends to shoot scenes. Q: Your short movies have been doing the rounds at film festivals. What is it like to show your film at a festival like that and enjoy the movie together with those audiences? Oscar: Well, Bob and I are like non-assuming guys who hide in the back or in the corner of the theater and casually observe the audiences reaction to the films, which has been encouraging and informative. We truly love the experience. Robert: It feels great. It feels like being at a big time premiere, when you're sitting there and the audience is focusing on your movie. It is a rush and you also get to network and meet fascinating people. Q: Do you see the fact that you travel all over the world for those film festivals as a bonus, or is the traveling something that is a part of making movies, but would you prefer to concentrate on making the films? Oscar: I personally love the energy and the networking that comes from attending these festivals. I mean they’re [the festival] saying that we like your stuff and in return we’re gonna show up and support the festival. It feel good, and, we have ego’s too. (Grinning) Robert: It's part of the game and I love it all. You get to meet other filmmakers and directors and you're watching other people's work and getting positive feedback from your peers. Plus, I love traveling. Q: Your next movie is going to be a feature length film. What made you decide to make the step from short movies to feature length? Oscar: We just felt that we wanted to take a story that was originally planned to be a short film and embellish on it, which allow us to delve into subplots and characterizations that can’t be developed in a short film. Robert: We wanted to be versatile. We wanted to have a variety of movies in our filmography. We have a six minute and a thirty minute film under our belt, so we wanted to take a stab at a feature length movie as well Q: What is the idea behind your next movie? Oscar: It's titled SPLITTING HAIRS 2.0: CASE COLD. It’s actually the extended sequel to our first short film, SPLITTING HAIRS, where three disgraced but highly decorated homicide detectives solve the murder of a Philadelphia stockbroker and the theft of ten million dollars in Mexican Bearer bonds. In SP 2.0, continuing the journey to redeem their reputation, homicide detectives Bobby Fermin, Kurt Minnis and Jimmy Bolton are reluctantly shuffled to the cold case squad to investigate a year old double murder, stemming from a mob cover-up. Searching for the truth takes them from New York City to Arizona, following clues and facts that reveal a racketeering indictment that is the catalyst for murder. With an interesting cast of characters, the detectives will never believe who’s responsible for five murders and one missing and presumed dead. A serial killer is in our midst. Q: When you are making a movie, are things like coming up with ideas collaborative efforts? Or is it more Oscar who does the writing, with Robert taking care of things behind the scenes? Or how is that arranged? Oscar: Sometimes, but primarily I come up with the ideas and write the script and direct the films. Robert: It’s mostly Oscar doing the writing and directing and I work with the actors rehearsing and defining characterization. I’m also creative, revising dialogue and co-directing scenes as well as casting. Q: From what I have seen in the trailers, your movies look like a lot of fun and I think a lot of my readers would enjoy watching them. Many of these, however, are not in a position to visit one of the festivals where your movie is showing. Do you plan to distribute the movies also in another way, or to release them on DVD? Oscar: Yes, we will distribute our films on our own eventually. RH: We are working to put out movies on DVD for sale everywhere. Q: When you are an independent movie maker, I can imagine you have to be very creative, since you don't have the budget that a big budget studio movie maker has. Do you think this makes you more creative, because you have to come up with new ways of filming scenes because of budget restraints? Oscar: Yeah, but we make our decisions on how we wanna shoot our films quite quickly without story boarding. We talk about it between ourselves. We don’t have a lot of time to spend in pre-production. We make it happen quite quickly. Q: Oscar, amongst other things, you have been an extra on some big Hollywood movies. Did working on these movies inspire you to start making your own movies? Or was it more: "I an do better than those guys!" Oscar: No, it was for me like a DNA fingerprint. Everyone has it’s own unique ID. To me, filmmaking is precisely like that. I feel that we will make our films in a unique style that will be satisfying to the audience because our vision is uniquely different from other filmmakers. Q: Robert, your background is more in the theater. When did you decide that making movies was more something you wanted to pursue? Robert: Conferring with Oscar over the years changed my thinking about the feasability of doing movies as opposed to theater Q: Where does the name of your production company, Malcolm Entertainment, come from? Oscar: It derived from wanting to find a name that stands out from others, won’t be easily forgotten, and the both of us being inspired by Malcolm X’s life and struggle, which mirrors our struggle to make good films. Q: What can we expect from Malcolm Entertainment in the future? Do you already have plans beyond the movie you are working on now, or are you taking it one movie at a time? Oscar: No, we have many, many ideas but don’t wanna get ahead of ourselves. Robert: We have plans but wanna take it one step at a time Q: Who would you name as your inspiration? Oscar: There are a few: David Mamet, Quentin Tarrintino, Martin Scorsese, Antoine Fuqua, Thomas Carter, Alfred Hitchcock, Clive Barker, Clint Eastwood, Spike Lee, Sidney Lumet. Robert: Sidney Portier, Lofton Mitchell, Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Spike Lee, John Singleton, Tyler Perry, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Richard Roundtree, Cuba Gooding, Jr. (who is also my cousin), Eddie Murphy, and Richard Pryor. Another one in the bag Mar 24, 2007 06:50AM
Finally finished production on the sequel to our short film Splitting Hairs titled, Splitting Hairs 2.0: Case Cold last week. I must say this was the most exhausted project I've ever done so far. Currently pre-edited at 82 minutes, i must say that there are quite a few good performances that were captured of this film. We worked with about 12 actors in this flick and that made for a degree of chaos sometimes but, in the end it was all good. Now, we begin the editing process today. Just moving on.
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE STUCK IN AN AIRPORT FOR TWO DAYS AND LIVE TO TELL ABOUT Feb 20, 2007 08:05PM
Bob and I headed out to La Guardia Airport 2/15 for a 11am flight to attend a screening of our film KNOW WHO YOUR TALKING TO at the Magnolia Independent Film Festival in Starkville, Mississippi but we never got there. The earlier snowstorm got us bumped and placed on standby for two days(Thurs and Fri). Our festival contacts were going back and forth to the airport to pick us up and were worried. It was totally draining and disappointing. We really wanted to be at the festival. After two days of being cramped up and coversating with so many people, we had to regretfully retreat. Well, there is always next time.

Going Global: KWYTO accepted at India\'s Pumelo International Film Festival 2007 Feb 20, 2007 08:03PM
The unique power of film is being recognized beyond the USA with the acceptance of Malcolm Entertainment\\\'s, \\\"KNOW WHO YOU\\\'RE TALKING TO\\\" as an official selection of the Pumelo International Film Festival in Mumbai, India 3/5-3/8/07. Sometimes just a whiff of a good story can lead to a buzz and then growing interest in a movie that we\\\'re very, very proud of and firmly entrenched in reality from a story standpoint. Reviews have been good and encourage us that we have something that people like, enjoy and and want to see more of.

R.I.P James Hill, Jr. Jan 25, 2007 09:00AM
This is a belated announcement of the passing of our dearest friend and Co-Star of SPLITTING HAIRS and the soon-to-be-completed SPLITTING HAIRS 2.0: CASE COLD, James Hill, Jr. on 12/1/06. He will be soley missed but he live on in our movies and will continue to make films for a bigger film studio up above. With Jim not around, it makes SH2.0 that much more special.
Hard Job But Somebody Has To Do It (SH:2.0 status report) Nov 07, 2006 07:43PM
Just wanted to let our friends know how the Splitting Hairs 2.0: Case Cold production is coming along. Up to this point we have 40 minutes of the film completed and about another 20 minutes to go. We're acutally creating the ending of the movie as we go, which is quite intersting and somewhat difficult. SP 2.0 is Malcolm Entertainment's first feature film and it is being made at a price to Bob and myself. Not in terms of money but stress. Scheduling a shooting schedule that brings the actors together is the biggest task we've had to deal with but we're making headway and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. The next factor has been the weather--which hasn't been great on the weekends, which is when we shoot primarily. The content of the movie I feel has captured the feel of a film noir from the 1940's in an urban setting. There are plot twists and clue discoveries that will keep the audience focused on the film and tender moments that give the film the proper balance. A lot of new faces that add depth and intrigue to the piece. From our opinion, it's bangin'. Will be posting another blog when we have something significant to report. Oscar & B.O.B.
We're at it again Aug 23, 2006 05:05AM
Began production on SPLITTING HAIRS 2.0: CASE COLD last week. Still rehearsing and shooting when the scenes are locked in. I personally feel that we captured some great images that will describe the hard work cold case investigators are doing. I truly love the filmmaking process because sometimes you are in possession of moments that you weren't aware of until you play them back. Still building the dream.

Finished the editing process yesterday on KNOW WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO and I'm completely satisfied with the finished product. Sometimes you never know what you'll end up with. But i must say that I was pleasantly pleased by the final cut. There is a subtle intensity and mystery about this short that leads you towards an eventual climax. I had never told a story in less that 30 minutes but now I know if your script is tight you can do anything. It's all about the dialouge in my films.
Splitting Hairs, (c)2005   May 17, 2006 08:06AM

In July, 2005, we completed shooting on the crime drama, " Splitting Hairs" ,a 29 minute short film that involves three highly decorated homicide detectives; Bobby Fermin, Jimmy Bolton, and Kurt Minnis, disgraced and busted in a strip club raid. With the charges dropped their offices stripped from them, they work from their cars. Proverbial princes of the city after the 1999 arrest of the Fordham Rapist, the three detectives are looking for a case that will restore their reputations. A Philadelphia stockbroker is murdered and 10 million in Mexican Bearer bonds were stolen from his hotel room. Shot in semi-documentary style, Splitting Hairs makes you root for the underdog as they investigate the murder. Shot throughout New York City, the story takes you on a journey with a satisfying ending.
