Katrina Anniversary Aug 29, 2006 09:51PM
So it's been an interesting year. The worste natural disaster to ever strike the United States, my house - a historical art gallery - was the first to go. So, I in this worst disaster of all time, created my first film based on the tragedy, my family lost their art gallery and finally got it back together and opened up after one year, and my aunt met the President. It's been an interesting year. Life is an adventure.

My first Flick Jun 22, 2006 10:22AM
This was my very first film. I took 101 video production my last year of college, which was last May, and that's when I was introduced to Final Cut video editing software, and Macs, and I fell in love. I made this film for my final project, and I honestly went a little too far with it and I think I scared some people but all in all, it was what I needed to do to make the big decision to invest in production equipment after I graduated.

Katrina Diary Trailer Jun 22, 2006 10:17AM
This is a trailer from my Katrina Diary film, my first film about Hurricane Katrina and how it destroyed my and everyone else on the Gulf Coast's homes, but I revolved it around my personal story - a story that begins the day before the storm.

We call it Music Jun 12, 2006 09:30PM

There are different parts of the brain people use. I think “right” and “left” are way too basic though.
I am listening to music, and thinking about songs that I love and don’t like, and songs that are classics and songs that are flops, there is a science to it I think. Actually, although I hate to say it, I believe there’s a science to everything…even creativity. Great screenwriters have lots of creativity to think of the things they think of, but they also have a good formula, that can be broken down in an A does this to B, and B does this to C style. I read that ABC stuff in a book about screenwriting, and on Sesame Street.
Rhythm is formulated.
Try to remember a favorite song. Now forget the words and think of the music. There was probably a certain melody that snagged your attention and soothed your mind. If there wasn’t and your insistent that it was the singer, then why aren’t the shelves at music stores stocked with a capella?
Back to the topic – the melody was a combination of sounds put together in a way that you liked. You could take the same sounds and mix them in another way and you might not like it, but they were still the same sounds. If that’s the case, don’t you think there could be a way we could figure out why particular combinations are soothing to us; for instance, the snare drum that taps 4 beats per second mixed with the saxophone playing in key to the rhythm – super basic at first, but there are hundreds of trillions of music combinations out there, and that’s music never seems to get old, it just changes – real quick fact I must throw in – music stimulates the brain through vibrations… so technically you enjoy a song because it stimulates your brain.
The whole points is ---- what if we figured out which combinations of music stimulate our brains the most and then plug these combinations into a super computer that calculates the “ultimate” song or songs…. I think hearing the ultimate song would unlock a part of our brain that we were incapable of using or allow us to finally use a part we never could before (like finally being able to wiggle your ears).
Hearing the ultimate song could make us smarter… it might allow us to see things like the Matrix…. Or it could cause us to go crazy, or it could cause the crazy people to go normal and the normal people to go crazy. But then again, who decided what a normal brain wave would look like anyway?? I think that’s like deciding where the circle starts. We decided what was normal based on our beliefs. Others would do the same based on their beliefs. Doctors would say, “Your brain is overly active in this here section (as he points as his charts) and not active enough in this other section. I would say, “Well Doctor, who’s to say if both parts became active I wouldn’t become a manic depressive maniac or a 23-foot penguin? Maybe that one part of my brain was inactive for a reason, or maybe its inactivity caused the 13th quadrant of my brain to compensate, which in turn made me who I am and how I’m capable to write something as insane at 75 words a minute without stopping.
That’s why I’m never going to get rid of my tonsils – they could be God’s way of identifying us – you take out your identity, your file is lost. Not that I’m saying heaven is a bureaucracy. Heaven could be anything. It could be an endless second, an eternity frozen in time, or it could be a world based on the collection of others people’s thoughts about you. If that were the case, Mother Teresa is a happy spirit. Heaven could be the next step to find Thesben (heaven’s heaven; however it would probably be named something different) that is of course, if words existed on that level. If they didn’t then it would simply be named . Maybe spoken words are the language of the underdeveloped brains, and the spirits of only communicate in vibrations, or as they would call it, . We call it music.
THEORY OF THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE AND TO MY ADHD Jun 12, 2006 09:07PM
I surely get lost in thinking when driving home from work. A new way to explain the origin of the universe enters my mind on this typical day of my life. I usually try hard to complete the thought before I get home. What made this hard to achieve was the fact that this question didn’t arise in my mind until I was almost home. The thought originated from some personally happy time as I drove merrily thinking about the Big Bang Theory. I asked myself a simple question – if theorists can speculate that the universe originated from a single point in space time based on evidence that the universe is expanding, then can they pin point the exact spot the Big Bang happened? This question began to drive me crazy, but still didn’t blow my horn and scream like the guy in the other lane was doing after I almost sideswiped him. I think that’s why he was screaming, but honestly I could have been wrong because I didn’t really pay attention – I was running a mind marathon.
How could scientists calculate such an immense problem like pinpointing the location of the Big Bang; trying not to steer off topic, I gave it a quick thought – if scientists can tell how old a star from a million light years away is based on its gamma rays, its entire lifecycle, and what it eventually changes into after its life cycle, why can’t they take a large sample of stars that were born around the point in spacetime and plot their location on a 3d plane.
I just missed the turn to my house.
Now, I believe scientists have the capability to understand where a star or planet used to be based on an array of factors. Lets say our planet was simply a dried goblet that detatched from our sun – that would mean Earth was born from the sun. Now, who’s the sun’s dad? I’m no good at recalling facts, so I’ll make something up. Let’s say the sun formed from a bunch of dust and elements that attracted under gravity and someone lit a match and it exploded into a 10 billion year old fire. Well, then those gasses, dust and elements were the sun’s father, or mother, respectively. So, who are all the gasses and dust particles’ parents? Maybe they merged together from exploding white dwarfs on a collision coarse. Well, if we know that the sun is a product of the collision course, then we know that was the destination. So we might be able to plot a graph of different planes of stars on the same life cycle and make other planes of other life cycles similar to rolling a pebble down a snow mountain. It would eventually be a huge ball of snow at the bottom, but if we rewound the tape, we would see it began from nothing but a pebble – most importantly, a pebble we dropped. Who dropped our pebble?
Anyway, I didn’t want to steer off track with this like the turn to my house, so long ridiculously complex problem would calculate into a 3d model which would pin point the origin of the universe. I snap back into reality just in the nick of time to miss another routine turn home, which would be fine if my friend wasn’t following me to my house. So I turn around again and take the right turn.
I quickly try to imagine what that single point in our universe would be like. I’m home, but I’m still thinking. I swear tomorrow will be different.
I kick off my shoes just as I kick off the thought of the force such a pin point in space time would have. Would it be a black hole? Would it be a portal into the negative universe (considering the universe would need a negative to balance). Or since the universe is expanding, would it expand from that single point like blowing up a balloon, or since the theorists say the universe will eventually shrink back into that pinpoint will a 3d model of this pin point resemble the tip from a water hose pointed in the air that when turned on shoots the universe up and out in all directions until it reaches the top and flows back down?
I open the refrigerator and look inside, but I’m not really looking… I’m right in the middle of thinking of how that 3d model would look. I guess the water hose idea is good enough for now. I’m back, and refrigerator is still open. I grab the milk, hurry up and grab the bowl, spoon and cereal, sit down, pour cereal and eat in audible silence.
I begin to disappoint myself thinking that that single point in the universe could just be like any other point in space. So how did that happen? A whole universe just exploded and here we are. So I think of origins of random things to see if I can get a comparison.
Done eating – I hurry up and put the cereal and milk away while trying not to loose the one way thought.
In my room, I grab a pencil or get in front of a computer and start typing the thought.
Now, this is weird, I just thrust myself directly from the past into the present now. I better keep typing because I stopped for a second and it turned into the past. I give up, its confusing me.
Must continue thought. First I need a drink, so I get a Gatorade real quick.
Here I am again. Okay. So I thought of origins of things to get a comparison. So naturally I just think of myself. I originated from my mom, which is what I don’t want to think about. Okay, a random baby originated from a mother, who spore the baby from the… we all know the story.
So, there was one point where each of us was one single point, kind of like the Big Bang. What’s odd is, we were made a single cell by 2 things, then grew into the most complex piece of equipment known to man – some more complex than others.
What if the single point in the Big Bang came from the joining of 2 forces in another realm, a realm we are incapable of seeing, detecting and above all, grasping.
Sounds crazy. Well, talk to a red blood cell and see if he understands life outside of you. That’s impossible, but is it? Each cell is alive, so why not talk to it. We can’t. Who’s to say they don’t talk to each other. I don’t know about you but when a cell gets raided by a virus and the white blood cells storm in and lay down the law, I’d like to know who dialed 911.
I’m not saying we are an infinitely small sized part of a larger life form. I’m just throwing ideas out there so I can sleep tonight.
And I hope I explained more than just this whole universe thing… I hope I explained why I sometimes miss the turn to my house, run stop signs and speed when driving, get home, forget to close the front door, put the milk in the cabinet, the cereal in the refrigerator, leave the refrigerator door open and forget to finish a conversation when you call me.
The End.
The Blog that explains it all Jun 11, 2006 03:06PM
My name is Justin Pearce, I'm a young filmmaker, new in the business except for an acting job I did back in 97, Bayou Ghost (its on IMDB)...anyway, I just made my first film based on Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed my home town of Biloxi MS and of course my home, which was also a historic art gallery my family had owned and operated for nearly 50 years. Needlless to say it sucked, and what sucked worse was I had been filming my first independent film and the only time I used the camera on my home was when I filmed a joking prediction about the hurricane coming to destroy the Gulf Coast. Well, instead of burying that footage I created a new first film, Katrina Diary, which contrasts how most people were acting before and how we stepped up to the plate after. I'm proud of it because I lost alot of sleep over this thing. You guys can check out previews on my website, RedWireFilms.com.
Okay, now, I'll post blogs, but know now that they are WAY OUTTA THERE! You'll see!

    Hey Justin,
I'm from Pass Christian (my parents are still living there), so I was thrilled to see your film page on Audience. Congrats on the honorable mention, and keep working hard and having fun. I can't wait to hear people talking about that great filmmaker from the Coast!

thanx fot the shout out. hey, we need to support each other, you know. You are a creative brother i really enjoy reading your blogs. i'm learning from you. So far shooting is dragging a little bit, but that's because i use a lot of non-actors, so it takes a while for me get them to nail it the way i want it. won't settle for less. We're shooting scene by scene. But overall, I like what happening. This is the sequel to Splitting Hairs, titled, SPLITTING HAIRS 2.0: CASE COLD. So far I'm proud of in it's infancy.

I have a weird little system for sound effects. First off, I can’t afford to buy thousand dollar special effects cd bundles, so I like to make my own with what I have. I have loops, and I use them, but in my own special way. Since none of the loops I have seem to be perfect just as they came, I have a few different things I do. If I need to make something happen fast then I try to get a loop that sounds like it has potential, then add the necessary filters to change it to what I specifically wanted. Basically, when I listen to loops and other ambient sounds, I don't pay as much attention to sound as I do for tempo and rhythm, because I can alter the sound with filters. Same goes for if I use my shotgun mic and record basic sounds that I know I can manipulate.

For instance, if I was filming a scary movie and I was about to have a ghost scare the crap out of someone, and just before that happened I wanted my character (and the audience) to hear some freaky whispering sounds of ghosts, then I would use my mic to record human voices talking. Maybe if the ghost was a girl then I’d record that girl talking, then I would go into soundtrack pro and add an echo filter for starters, and then add an AUDynamicsProcessor filter, then fiddle around with it until it sounded awesome. And of course I’d pan it around the speakers and probably duplicate the track and stagger them so it would become more intense. Reversing the sound on almost anything is another way to get some cool stuff.

So basically I make my own special effects, and I will continue to do so because I can’t really afford to hire people for those kinds of jobs yet. Plus, I really love sound – almost more than video editing. I just love creating that kind of stuff. There’s just so much freedom to manipulate sound. Oh and lastly, when I say I listen to loops primarily for the rhythm and tempo, I meant that if I had a loop that for instance, sounded like a plane flying over my head, and I needed a freaky bass sound, then I’d toss that loop into a low-pass filter and adjust it so that only the lowest frequency played, which would be the low bass, and the actually “plane” sound would be gone.

How do you do special effects?? If you have any ideas for me then I’d love to hear them, because 2 heads are better than 1, and I really don’t have a lot of people where I’m from that are interested in movie making and I’ve pretty much had to learn this stuff alone, so I’d appreciate any knowledge that you might have picked up along the way. Take care and keep up the good work!

Reason is professional sound software that substitutes premade loops for a keyboard and sliders. I think it's mainly used in "the business" for creating hip hop beats. It'd be really helpful though and a lot more useful than soundtrack or garageband.

As for myself, sound editing is what I lack the most. If I absolutely, positively have to, I use sound track. But even then, I can't spend more than 5 minutes in it without feeling sick to my stomach.

One question: what do you use for sound effects?

    Thanks,
    Vernon

Thanks for the input. Question. What's Reason? I'm guessing it's professional sound editing software or equipment. I'd love to know about it; however, until I get a little bigger in the game I won't be able to hire someone... I will have to learn it myself, which I really don't mind because I love this stuff. I am about to purchase Logic Pro, and my professional Mixer just recently came in... that way I'll be able to real time mix my soundtrack with actual faders and not a mouse. Which equipment do you use on your projects? Oh, and I was short spoken on the last message, but your use of lighting is fantastic. My favorite part was when that killer was walking and there were 2 lights in the far distance, and as he walked his head would shift and block on light while the other one shined just past his face, and vice versa. In photography they say the viewer looks at the brightest spot on a photograph first, so by that theory your use of lighting frames the subject so perfectly. Anyhoo, th

    J.J.,

Thanks for the comment, much appreciated.

I took a look at your first movie and your trailer, and I must say that you've got talent. This is especially apparent in your editing skills, which far surpass mine. I could, however, tell that all of your music was done in Soundtrack. It's probably not noticeable to someone who hasn't worked with and around it for a couple of years, but I highly recommend hiring someone who knows their way around Reason.

    Keep up the good work,
    Vernon
