Empire Not Liberty

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT—TAMO NOONAN
Empire Not Liberty (5 “Pieces of Work”), is a poetic short concerned with the alienating and dehumanized nature of modern warfare. All 5 chapters are after Shakespeare—three montages directly set to monologues, “Oh What a Rogue & Peasant Slave Am I,” “To Be or Not to Be” (both from Hamlet). The ancients are featured in excerpts from Othello--both Othello and Iago.
Of particular interest to me is how in the Iraq war the wisdom of the military talent has not been utilized—much like the days before the Fall of the Roman Empire. In that time a "talent" was currency and was the principal exchange among the stooges of Empire in conquered lands. Too, the Caesars arrogantly believed that they could ignore their best captains and intelligence—or, as in the case of Mark Anthony or even Ovid, exile them incommunicado. Talents enabled Caesar's bureaucratic cronies of the Senate to render progaganda spectacles and triumphes, swaying and bullying both their common and patrician.
One segment addresses psy-op warfare against one's own--perhaps the most ancient form of statecraft. Witness Othello:
“O, now, for ever
Farewell the tranquil mind! farewell content!
Farewell the plumed troop, and the big wars,
That make ambition virtue! O, farewell!
Farewell the neighing steed, and the shrill trump,
The spirit-stirring drum, the ear-piercing fife,
The royal banner, and all quality,
Pride, pomp and circumstance of glorious war!
And, O you mortal engines, whose rude throats
The immortal Jove's dead clamours counterfeit,
Farewell! Othello's occupation's gone!” (Act III, Scene 3)
