Film Maker's Blog

Moving Jul 15, 2006 03:06PM
So, I've decided I enjoy blogging. I didn't want to, but I do. *bites knuckles* I've started another blog on web.mac.com/wagnon I like it the .Mac ease, so I'm not sure what I want to do with my Audience blog It is the blog that made me like bloggging, so Audience will always have a special place in my heart. Maybe I can strike a good balance between the too. Hmm...
PICTURE LOCK Jun 30, 2006 01:39PM
The edits are as tight and beautiful as they're getting. Now Sugar is off to the sound team. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like with the guns and punches.
Finely Back with Sugar Jun 28, 2006 10:05AM
I enjoyed my couple of weeks worth of commercials, but now I'm back working on the fine cut for Sugar Creek. I had a week off so I decided to dedicate it to helping out with the edit. James has made a lot of progress since I last saw it, and I'm proud to say it's looking like a movie. I'm sitting beside the AVID right now, and am about to go elbows deep into it. Before I do I have one last thing to say. I like AVID, but all of this AVID work has convinced me to buy my own copy of Final Cut Studio, which I desperately miss using.
Restless Jun 22, 2006 12:15PM
Lately, I've had a few days off, and they're driving me insane. I miss working. I'm going to do a little more family/friends visting this week, then I'm back up to Fayetteville to volunteer some time on the Final Draft of Sugar Creek.
I talked to James and he said the the Final is coming along well. I can't wait to see what progress he's made. He's cut about fifteen minutes off of the two hour plus run time. The sweet spot is going to be the two hour mark. The AVID has been moved out of the office to James place, so I'm going to have a comfy bed to sleep on. No more inflata-matress!
He told me he may have another edit job coming up, which means I might have another edit job coming up!

"Post Blog Entry" Jun 19, 2006 09:01PM
I had a wonderful, witty blog I thought I posted last night. Maybe I dreamed it. Maybe it was so good the internet rejected it for fear of a mass spreading of happiness and enlightenment. Or maybe I just forgot to hit the "Post Blog Entry!" button.

I'm still new to the blog experience and assume it's a rookie mistake. We live, we learn, we hit "Post Blog Entry!"
Considering my 5am call tomorrow, I'm up late Jun 17, 2006 07:12PM
I'm back in Little Rock, and glad to be home. I've missed my friends. I've missed my family. Above all, I've missed my bed.
I've been gone for four months and had a lot of bridges to re-build, or let die considering the person. I've worked on a variety of commercials the last two weeks:

Stamp Out Smoking
Mt. Magazine State Park (There's a new, fancy lodge there)
Arkansas Board of Education (maybe a commercial - they weren't sure and I'm glad I charged a day rate)
and tomorrow I work on a Tropical Smoothie commercial or three

Next week I'll contact James about Sugar Creek and see how the Final Cut is coming. I needed a break;
The Compression Isn't Half Bad Jun 01, 2006 08:14AM
So I've now watched bits and pieces of the iPod Version of the film. Short of a couple of shots, the compression isn't half bad. The file ended up being over 2 gigs. I feel relief now. I can leave today. Off to give this DVD with the file on it to the composer. Then, the Bahamas! Happy Birthday, Me!

These last few posts have been short. When I get back in June, I'll give a proper post with lots of updates. There's work a brewin'...
Happy Birthday, Me! May 31, 2006 11:52PM
My Birthday will be on the 3rd, and since I'll be out of the country for it I decided to get myself something nice now. I got a resonably priced copy of Final Cut Express 3.5 off of eBay for my MacBook Pro. I love me. Now, I may can get some side editing gigs, which would suit me just fine. I prefer Final Cut over AVID, so I'll be glad to get to use if for my work. I like the interface better, plus I can use my Mac! Long Live Indie!
Didn't Work May 31, 2006 09:44PM
...so I'm exporting it as an MP4 iPod Ready file. It least the composer can watch it on his computer, or iPod until the DVD situation can be sorted out.
AVID Woes May 31, 2006 07:05PM
So I'm supposed to walk out the door tomorrow with a copy of the movie to give to the editor. There's a problem though. I can't coerce AVID into exporting the way I want. We don't have access to a DVCPRO HD deck to go back to, and the AVID DVD software is M.I.A. So far the only viable option I've stumbled upon is making an AVI version of the feature. I hope this works...
Oh, Yeah!!! May 31, 2006 12:57AM
This year Defenitely Will be my year of IMDB. I just checked and they listed me for "Come Early Morning." A friend checked my ranking and I am the 1,315,398th most popular name. That's right, be jealous...
I Like It Rough May 31, 2006 12:55AM
So even with there needing to be some serious tightening up of the cuts, and the addition of music and sound fx, the rough is looking might fine. A few quick fixes left before exporting the video to a DVD, and away I go. Soon my help on this project will be done, and I'll be off to the Bahamas for my brother's wedding and my Birthday! After that, a well deserved break before the 48 Hour Film Project hits town.
A quick update, the movie before this one is in an editing room getting special effects added. I worked on "Mel and Tom: Goin' Huntin'," which stars Mel Tillis, the stuttering cowboy, and Tom Lester, who you may know from "Green Acres." It is a hunting comedy along the lines of "Dorf." In fact, Tim Conway came down for two days of shooting, which was tons of fun. They are all very nice people to work with.
With both "Mel and Tom: Goin' Huntin'" and "Sugar Creek" going down early this year, and my retroactive request to be added to "Come Early Morning" which I worked on last year, I believe this year I'll get my very first listing on IMDB. Soon, I can just tell people to IMDB me. Oh, that will be the day! Validity, here I come. It hasn't even been a year since I graduated college, but it seems like forever. I've been so lucky with work lately. Let's hope that trend continues.

of Rough Cut-y Goodness
SoSoClose May 29, 2006 11:59PM
Only two scenes left to tackle on the rough cut. The director is furiously working as I type. It seems that the June 1st deadline is entirely feasible. I remember a month ago, looking at the blank hard drive. Now, I can see how far we've come, literally. The rough is looking like it will be well over two hours, which means that after the principal editor starts hacking away, there will still be enough left for a feature length movie. This is the largest projected that I've help edit, and I can't help but feel like I've accomplished something immense and wonderful. I can say without reservation that if I hadn't worked on this movie and I ran across it in a theater or video store, I would want to watch it. That is a really good feeling, a feeling that I could learn to live with.
ACTION! May 25, 2006 10:17PM
Today, I edited my very first action scene. I got to sift threw the footage of punches and bloody spit, and piece together what can only be considered an "Ass Whoopin'." It was a lot of fun. This is my first action/horror movie to help edit, and it's definitely a different style from drama or comedy. While you're doing it, it seems like the cuts are too short, and no one will understand what's going on, but fresh eyes tell me that it's good. The director didn't re-edit it, he only reordered some of the action, which was a complement. It made me feel like I did a good job, like I cut what the director had envisioned.

The June 1st Rough Deadline is a week away and we are making very good progress. I think we're going to have a very refined rough by then to send off to the principal editor. We'll be sending a copy of the rough to the composer as well, who will start getting a feel for the movie. Of course, there will also be the rough I'll be taking to show off to friends and family. I can't wait 'til I can see what my family thinks about how I've spent the last two and a half months with Production and Post! I hope they can see why I love my job so much...

Rough Work for a first Blog May 23, 2006 09:32PM
This is my first blog entry; not only on withoutabox, but ever. I've never found a place that I felt I would like to share my experiences, but I have a feeling that Audience may be it. I just never got the My Space bug.

So for my first not My Space blog entry:
I've entered the last week I have available to finish a rough cut of Sugar Creek, www.sugarcreekmovie.com
The rough cut is looking really good. We shot it on two Vari-Cams, one with a 35mm lens adapter so we could use 35mm prime lens. It was a fun set to be on, and now I'm getting to help further the project.
I was First AC on set, and now I'm Assistant Editor. Oh, an Assistant's life for me:-) There are nice aspects of being an assistant. You get to see how different people work, both within his/her job, and with other people. You'll hear no complaints out of me. I mean, I get to work on movies. How sweet is that?

I've been very surprised by the amount of work I've found so far this year:
2 features: "Mel and Tom: Goin' Huntin'" and "Sugar Creek," look for them in video stores near you
2 episodes of "Haunting Evidence," look for it on CourtTV
and various commercials, Backyard Burger, State Highway Patrol, etc...

I haven't spent more than two nights in a row at my apartment for over four months now. It's both awesome and depressing at the same time. I'm looking forward to have a few days off in June. I love the hectic lifestyle, but everyone deserves a vacation. In my case, it's going to be the Bahamas for my birthday! Oh, and my brother will be getting married there too, but it's mostly MY BIRTHDAY. *insert carribean dance*
I wonder if I'm supposed to use this blog for personal, business, or a mix of both. I'm using it as a mix, and this is kind of therapeutic. To type out, acknowledge all the crazy of running around the state working on movies/TV. All of a sudden I'm feeling very tired and my shift on the AVID is only a few hours away.
To Whom It May Concern,
Goodnight

Hmm, I guess this sounds like a generic blog posting, and I guess it is, but I'm new to this. You'll have to give me a few entries before I start having fun with 'em.
