WELCOME TO MY LIFE WINS "AUDIENCE CHOICE" IN EUREKA SPRINGS! Nov 18, 2006 10:52AM
The Eureka Springs Film Festival was good to me.... . . . "Welcome To My Life" wins the "AUDIENCE CHOICE" award! (http://www.eurekafilms.org/awards/06/index.html . . . EUREKA SPRINGS DIGITAL FILM FESTIVAL- IN PRAISE OF THE SMALLER FESTIVAL Oct 19, 2006 09:11AM
I just got back from the Eureka Springs Digital Film Festival (they're losing the "digital" in the name next year since it is misleading. It accepts all films.) I was treated like a Goddess. They put me up for 7 nights if I wanted it (I stayed for 5) in this fabulous all suite hotel where I got 2 free "The Works" spa treatments. (Incredibley generous proprietors as well) http://www.palacehotelbathhouse.com At my hotel upon my arrival was a gift basket filled with the usual: posters, etc., along with incense and burner, trolley passes, a gift certificate at a local restaurant which bought me lunch there twice, passes to local attractions, etc. The editor of the local paper and I had been dialoguing for a while (he did a story on me) and I joked about how everyone was so nice that I may never leave-unless I couldn't find good coffee there. Wouldn't you guess also in my hotel upon my arrival was a French press and pound of organic French roast- a gift from the generous editor, Dale Mcurry. Eureka Springs is 90 minutes from the airport and they had the lovely Janet Alexander pick me up, take me back, and basically take me anywhere I wanted to go when I was there. I was listed as the "Special Guest" at a lovely 3 course dinner at the fabulous Grand Hotel the night of my first screening... On and on I could go, but you get the picture. This was a 5 dollar entry fee with my student ID. All I knew is that it was a beautiful part of America that I had never been to. That's always been my goal. Not the laurel leaves, but seeing a place I'd not normally ever have reason to go to if it wasn't for being a filmmaker and meeting all these crazy wonderful people I'd never have the opportunity to know otherwise. If you're looking for connections, and distributors this is probably not the place for you (though there were 5 millionaires in a room of 30 people one night in Chelseas bar, so if you're a good salesman-who knows). Cris Dunnam the festival director and the man who facilitated my fabulous stay and his dynamo wife Barb were some of the nicest people I have ever met. Please support them in the future. They deserve it.
TARFEST! Oct 19, 2006 09:09AM
Cool, cool, cool. How can you beat screening outside, under a full moon, with all your friends in tow, a basket full of great food and wine, at the La Brea Tar Pits? A fun fest prgrammed by Kimberly Browning-a driven, passionate, dynamo of a broad. Oh my gosh! I almost forgot to mention the 1000 feet of 16MM Film donated by Fuji in all the accepted filmmakers goody bags. Never having held a can of film before, i'm hear to confess I open my freezer and pet it daily. Don't miss it next year!
PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL Sep 06, 2006 12:32PM
In a word? Wow. Only have a film at the Market? GO. Not screening is SO not a limitation to all the amazing things that are possible for you here. An abundance of some of the kindest people and most talented filmmakers I have met to date. Industry presence is HUGE.
NOW ON YOUTUBE Sep 06, 2006 12:15PM
This music video is the theme song that opens and closes Welcome To My Life. In it's original incarnation, it was a stand-up performance piece I did at the Comedy Store for several months in Los Angeles. The characters name was Beverly Hell. She had 3 back-up singer/commentarians and a really funny monologue that bookended the song. I loved the dimension the piece had then but had to water it down since the character of "Beverly" didn't serve the films purpose. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmox_HSS7Ro

About Welcome To My LifeĀ  May 17, 2006 06:11PM
I didn't want to be another actress lamenting my crappy agent and lack of work. Welcome To My Life was born simply to give myself a job that didn't involve one line and a miniskirt.

I was part of a filmmakers group with a guy out of Chicago who had a production company and was looking to shoot pilots. I wrote "Welcome To My Life" (my first script) and submitted it. The guy loved it and preproduction commenced. A week before we were supposed to shoot with no prior mention, he hit me with a contract giving him 50% ownership of the project. Poor guy was under the grand misconception that I would acquiesce out of desperation because we were so close to shooting my "baby." Uh...no. I'm a Spanish/Italian NYC broad. I don't respond well to manipulation. Suffice it to say Mr. Chicago was shown the door with a stiletto in his arse.

Bravado aside, it did hurt. I loved being part of a team and the dissolution of it in such an ugly way sent me fetal for a few weeks.

A month later, having gotten my balls back, I set the wheels in motion on my own. I didn't know a THING about how to make a film. Duvatine? Music in the public domain? Huh? Soon I found myself helming a 30 person cast and crew. I'd schedule 15 minute breakdowns and push on. I'd meet with a filmmaker friend before crew meetings so I'd know what the hell to say to a UPM, etc., without sounding like an idiot. I learned how to beg! And much to my normally prideful surprise, it wasn't so bad! Not when you believe in something, anyway. I was blessed with a stellar crew. People who work for deferred-pay contracts don't normally hold the bar of excellence high, but they all, for the most part, remained staunch professionals. I work hard at attaining success in part just to hire them again.

With out-of-the-gate screenings at CBS and Cinespace, acceptance at the very first fest I entered, The Other Venice Film Festival, and two early acceptances for upcoming ones in September and October, I am thrilled to be part of this spectacular new community of artists.

Stay tuned!
